Does G-SYNC solve it?

Does G-SYNC help to unnotice microstutters/FPS drops?

Hi all,

I always play with V-SYNC @ 60 FPS. In some games there are microstutters/FPS drops for some reason, when the framerate drops from 60 to 57 for a moment (just an example). Sadly I can notice these drops, and sadly it bothers me very much, because I spent about 2000$ to be able to play smoothly. I am NOT a 60 FPS masterrace fan, I have completed anno Diablo 2 with sometimes 2-5 FPS several times, didn't care, because I knew that was all my old PC could do. Now it bothers having finally an "expensive" PC.
I'm thinking about buying a new monitor. Will G-SYNC help me to NOT notice the FPS drops, and able to see the games smoothly?

faster cpu solves microstutter and fps drops.
g-sync solves lag and tearing.

but in your case the stutter is caused by v-sync so yes,g-sync would solve the stutter when the fps drops under 60.for now just enable adaptive v-sync in nv control panel,it'll disable v-sync whenever the fps drops under 60.you'll get screen tearing but less stutter and lag.

So I will still see the FPS change with a G-SYNC monitor?
57 vs 60 ? barely.I do see it,but it doesn't put me off like when I was still using locked 60 and the fps dropped.you're still getting 57 fps,but the controls remain responsive and the animation remains smooth,if that's what you're asking about.there's no choppiness or increased lag when 60 drops to 57.

sadly,your 980 can't do "g-sync compatible" version of adaptive refresh rate.I suggest selling it for rx580 and getting a freesync monitor.

I'm not quire sure if we are talking about an older system listed in your system specs ... or a newer one. Certainly a 4 year old system ids pretty much nearing EoL anbd your Dell is not G-Sync or FreeSync compatible. Looking at its current worth, you can use the following rule of thumb

Rule of Thumb - Take your build cost and then subtract 10% .... then 5% for each month of age for 6 months (60% value at this point) ... then 10% for every 6 months thereafter.

0.5 year old - 60% of build cost
1.0 - 50%
1.5 - 40%
2.0 - 30%
2.5 - 20%
3.0 - 10%

In other words, the current value of the system must be correlated to expected performance .... and there's little left there after 4 years

With a 144+ Hz monitor and a powerful enough card in a balanced < $2000 current generation system ... you would have no problems whatsoever playing say Witcher 3 at around 100 fps with a 165 Hz G-Sync 10 bit IPS Gaming Monitor ... Tho I'd also suggest giving turning off G-Sync and playing under ULMB @ 100 hz a shot.


But if you are interested in solving your problems, I'd start with a capable G-Sync monitor and then adding a recent generation GFX card .... everything else , other than being tight on storage will do fine.

I have these 1~3 fps noticeable drops with Watch_Dogs 2 and The Crew 2 for no reason actually, since the GPU/CPU aren't even at 100% load when it happens.
I use a 165Hz G-Sync monitor but I play these games at 1440p 60Hz, G-Sync on but still noticeable, also V-Sync doesn't help.
GTA V runs great with G-Sync 99.99% of the time.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
gsync will help with frame pacing but not with fps drops. frame pacing = when you have 60 fps but things are still jerking by (solved with any sync/vsync). frame drops = your game freezes for a split second.

basically anything that vsync doesnt solve gsync wont solve. Micro-stutter on a single gpu usually refers to frame pacing which is why i voted yes.

When you drop below 60 fps on vsync, it will usually half the refresh rate (i.e. drop to 30fps) so that is noticeable, on gsync it will be much less noticeable. So overall it is much smoother but it wont cover up any other bottlenecks the system has.

It is true only with double buffering. And most of the games, especially the new ones (at least I really hope so..) has V-SYNC with triple buffering built in.

V-SYNC with triple buffering

Triple buffering only works with OpenGL I believe.
Also you can enable this in the nvidia control panel.

You can also change the maximum pre-rendered frames in the nvidia control panel.

Vsync was a bad idea from the start.
It's always adding lag and makings things slower than they really are.

Just disable it and live with the occasional tearing.
Unless you really-REALLY focus on observing the tear line, you'll probably not notice it while being focused on shooting your enemy

Yeah you are right, but there is an awesome little program called D3DOverrider, which can force triple buffering under DirectX games. Obviously this doesn't work with all games as Nvidia Control Panel can't force its settings in all games either. But always worth a shot.

I am curious you never tell if you use VGA, DVI or DisplayPort since your Dell monitor supports all 3.



I hope you are using DisplayPort and not VGA.
