Well, I sprung for a GTX 280 for my new build and decided in the heat of the moment to blow some extra cash on a cheapy Zotac 8400GS for PhysX. Well everything I read says that having an extra card for PhysX is useless if you have a 9800 or better.

So, I guess can anyone confirm/deny that? If its true then what can i do with it other than stick in the closet as a backup card? Are they any good as a dedicated F@H card?

My 9600GSO has PhysX built in. As do most Nvidia cards 8000 series and higher. Your GTX 280 should have it too.

deleted your duplicate post for you.

The extra card is somewhat useless. the 280 has dedicated physx hardware so it doesnt save you any performance using a second card.

If you really dont want it, you could always give it to me! :)

JC316: 8xx0 and 9xx0 cards dont have dedicated physx. they use shaders for it, reducing 3D performance slightly. a second card saves you that performance. GTX 2xx cards have seperate physx chips so its irrelevant.

i guess i should have made it more clear in my original post, but is there any advantage whatsoever to having a standalone card for physx only alongside a much more powerful gpu like the GTX 280? I also didn't think about it but wouldnt there be some kind of performance drop in having the GPU do both graphics and physx?

Do GTX 200's really have a built in chip? Is it that thing that's next to the DVI ports?

its not a seperate physical chip, thats just bad wording on my part. its a dedicated part of the GPU die.

well the only plus i could think of using a separate card for the physx is if you actually the use the 2nd card and it disabled the feature on the 280 while using the 2nd card for physx the temp on the 280 would drop a bit cuz less work load is put on the 280 and even may lengthen the life span of the card it self

So I was right afterall! Now just to find some decent games that actually support PhysX! :toast:

Also, to answer part of my original post but how would this be as a dedicated F@H card?

well the 8400 is a pretty weak card, for details on that go ask in one of the F@H threads or do a google... i dont think many people would have tried on such low end cards

wow...that hurt an 8400gs owner like me :(

there's really no use for that type of low end graphic card; save it for testing motherboards without built in graphics. or TRASH THE SUCKER:rockout:

he doesnt look like he is from the 3rd world country if you ask me, think about it a 8800 series card as his main and a q6600, thats faster than what i got. and what about you inferno you have a A64 with a 4850. and your saying im hurting the 3rd world countries pfftt. and if you didnt read my post i was talking about the cards are not very strong for Physics Processing where a 9600GSO/8800GS would be.

your GTX 280 should do PhysX great without a dedicated card :)
If you really insisted on a dedicated PhysX card then you should have bought a 9600GT :D

Wait a min, there are no Nvidia Physx cards. You have to download the software to enable Nvidia GPU physx, the GTX 280 should support it, you don't need the 8400GS. I had the 8400GS PCI version and it supported Physx. Didn't really notice any difference when playing games like Infernal, between my 2400HD, which does not even support it.

I don't know what all the hype about Nvidia GPU physx is all about anyway, because when i play Infernal, i can see all the eye candy and stuff in the game, using my Radeon 2400HD.

yup, there is a racing game i play and its called Project Torque, the physics are crazy in that, like when you hit a freaking barrel strait on or take out a fire hydrant, or smack into a concrete column in Construction yard.

not true, i have used a 9600GT happily for physx, and an 8600GT 256 oc cut the mustard well enough too.

surely they wont give you the physx performance a 96+ sp card will, but its enough, hardly what i would call useless. remember how (theoretically) weak the ageia physx card was?

Do the GTX2xx cards really have "dedicated" section of silicon for Physx? I looked through several architectural slide decks and can't seem to find it. Or is it just that when you have 192 (or more) shaders that if it grabs 8 of them for Physx the impact is irrelevent. Now if you have a 8600 with 32 shaders and you grab 8 of them for Physx then it is noticeable.

If there are some architectural charts showing the dedicated Physx section can you point me to them? (I want this to be true since I have a GTX260) :)

Do not hurt the third world country PC users. Here most of people think 7300 GT a good card and the 8400GS would be a monster.:nutkick:

Dude tell me about it  I live in a 3rd world country and people here measure the performance of a card by its frame buffer  They are like, this card has 1gb memory so its better than your 512 mb card

I hate that kinda people over here :( They just think that they know better cuz the dumbass salesperson at a dumbass shop said so. )

And to top it all off, in our country pc parts cost an arm or a leg. I was looking at an 8800GTX at the ASUS store last year and they said that it costs Rs. 75,000 (roughly 750 US $) and when I asked how much the 9800GTX costs they said Rs. 90,000 ( 900 US $)

If one of you guys start shipping stuff over here, you could easily make a living outta it by selling it at reasonable prices :rockout:

Where are you from man I live in country like that and I work in PC shop and have printed score lists from techpowerup and tomshardware to show them that model number and memories are not like buying apples. Believe me it hard to explain to some one that 256 ddr3 vga is much faster than 1gb ddr2 card. I have gray hair because of that and I`m not kidding.

If I was not too embaresed I would send you the price list of systems that we sell to see the naming of the PCs and the specs.

Macedonia. And what is pissing me off is other stores that talk shit that never ever read a review little less do the comparation them self talking nonsense.
For Example there are MSI 3850 256mb ddr3 that are the same price as 9500GT 512 DDR2 and 3850 is twice faster but because of 256 and not 512 we are not going to sell them. I can`t fight any more :D.
We are going to offer them to people that are friend or friend of friends.
