Does my card run too hot?

I just bought Asus r9 280x dc2, idle at 37 degree. I thought the temp was somewhat high, suspecting poor thermal paste apply from factory, I applied aftermarket paste(xigmatek pti-g4512) on the core. Idle temp jumped up to 41 degree.
I changed applying method from center dot and cross, spread, but the temp stayed at 40+ degree. I changed thermal paste to Arctic silver 5, and the temp is unchanged. What's happening here? Am I doing something wrong when I apply paste?

ambient temp is about 26 degree and cpu temp is 33 degree. It could be base case air flow, but 10 degree difference from cpu temp?

37c was a perfectly fine idle. You shouldn't have messed with it at all. You need some MX-2-4 they all work great and no cure time. Also not conductive.
What was your max temps at? That's what acutely matters.

You're temps were fine to begin with. :)

On a GPU die, you want to spread a thin even layer of paste over the GPU.

max temp after playing bf4 for 2 hours is 85. I know it doesn't harm the card or anything but the fan gets louder so I wanted to lower that.

You should have never opened your card; your temps are fine.
