Thats a loaded question. If you want DX11 or over 4 Gb ram then you will need 7 64 bit. And by the way W Xp 64 is crap

Vista 64-bit would also work.

At this point Vista and Win7 are pretty much identical back end wise, Win7 just has some UI tweaks.

More memory capability, namely.

Yes but realistically are there any games which benefit from having more than 16GB RAM? Or perhaps in the near future...

I'm not saying you should get it, just clearing up information.

Not really, but since it looks like Win7 might be the OS of choice for a good while, it doesn't hurt to have the option to go with more than 16GB if you wanted. Plus, something feels wrong with buying a 64-bit OS that artificially limits the amount of RAM you can use. One of the main points of a 64-bit OS it to allow you to use huge amounts of RAM, so limiting it to 16GB is just so wrong, IMO.

Plus, the ability to use GPedit and the much better controls for user accounts is worth the $20.

Everyone knows that gopal, but people will still post with opionions and other information.
It's what makes TPU great. :)

IMO there is ample reason to go with Win7 whether you are gaming or not.
It's just far superior to XP all around.

as i said earlier, XP lasted 10 years. 7 might do the same. even in 5 years time - hell yes, it'll make a difference.

Vista = Kernel 6.0
Seven = Kernel 6.1

If I remember well. I had vista x64 over 2years, since SP1, never had any issue. Before SP1, there was problem with compatibility, and driver (thanks nVidia for BSOD).

Yes but realistically are there any games which benefit from having more than 16GB RAM? Or perhaps in the near future...

Right now, no, I never seens a game requires that ram. Software might be useful. or having more than 16gb of ram, you can make a RAM drive, and put a game on it for fast loading :D

If some program doesn'T seems to work well on WIndows 7, there is the compatibility mode, which some software did like. WLM, if you want it to stay in the notification area, you need it to run in Vista SP2 compatibility. Anyway, Windows 7 vs XP, Win7 is better as it his recent, more optimized (like ram, etc..).

You can'T go wrong except if you need absolutely software in WIndows XP (which can be run into a Virtual machine)

Does OS matters in gaming?
Currently i am planning to upgrade my rig!(This is the link to my new rig: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168626 )
And i am thinking that does it will be okay with Windows XP Pro SP3 or i need to upgrade it to Windows 7 and i know Windows XP only support DX9 and W7 supports DX11!

My Question is -
Do i need to upgrade my OS to play latest games ?

If you play DX9 games, then frame rates can be a lot better by around 30% (I've benched this myself). Sounds crazy, but it's true. If you're already getting crazy high frame rates, then this doesn't matter, but if it's borderline, then it's well worth sticking to XP for gaming only and use Windows 7 for everything else. Note that XP 32-bit is faster than XP 64-bit.

If you want to play DX10/DX11 games, then you have no choice but to upgrade to Windows 7. It looks like Windows 8 will have about the same gaming performance as Windows 7, too.

In the future it definitely will, considering as time goes on Windows XP's market share will drop and development will be focused on whatever current popular OS's are out at the time. Currently no, as you can still run the majority of games on XP just without the DX11 feature sets, so if you are content with running games in DX9 then sticking with XP is fine. If you want to future proof a bit and maybe get into some DX11 gaming(need a DX11 compatible GPU though) then i'd move over to Windows 7.

Your 30% difference is in Aero. Turn Win7 to basic while in game and watch the magic happen. ;)

That I'd like to see, lol. I can't see what difference switching between Aero or basic modes makes on a full screen game? If it had, we would have heard of it by now.

I didn't like the fact that my beloved XP was ageing and that i needed to upgrade to 7. for the longest time i held off the upgrade. but then i had to build another PC and i thought this would be the time to start completely afresh - fresh parts, fresh OS. Deep down i wanted to dual boot 7 with XP in case i couldn't play any older(er) games that weren't compatible with 7. but thanks to sites like gog.com they allow much older games to be played on new OSes and i've lost the urge to dual boot. everything works well with 7.
rambling aside, OS matters if you're playing really old games like from the Win95/98 era, but for that you'd need a legacy PC as today's hardware isn't compatible.

32bit only supports 4GB of RAM total, including the ram on the GPU. Also, I've seen a 30% performance advantage on a quad core CPU in IntelBurnTest using a 64bit OS. Sure, there aren't any 64bit only games out right now, but I don't see why you would want to hold yourself back on a 32bit OS.

No, 32bit OS only support and use 3-3.5GB of ram so if you have 4GB then a max of 3.5 of that will be usable. More specifically 3.28GB. A 64 bit OS supports all the way up to 128GB of ram, and obviously a desktop won't have that but bust most enterprise servers do and they all run a 64 bit OS.

To answer the question from the OP. I would upgrade to Windows 7 if your upgrading your rig. No reason not too, get the best out of your new parts.

Good choice gopal, but it may not be long before you ask the same questions about W8, since it's showing to have a DX11 performance increase. I just wish they'd put in an option to disable the Metro desktop entirely so you can use it as a Windows only OS, after all, it is called "W"8, not M8 or T8.

Duh, I'll second that. I think Microsoft are heading for a crash worse than Vista with this one. :rolleyes:

I think Microsoft are heading for a crash worse than Vista with this one. :rolleyes:
It's a bit of a shame they're so stubbornly insisting on merging a tablet OS with a desktop OS, because it really is fundamentally sound as a core OS, but hey, that's MS, always shooting themselves in the foot.

Some games, not many, can only be played with DX 11 capable systems. Also the new features in dx 11 won't be available to you if you don't upgrade, even if u have a brand new gpu..
