Does this socket looks normal to you?

Out of nowhere my daily drive OC has become unstable. Took the CPU out to check and saw this. Does it look like it has some sort of dark area near the edge? This is an RMAed Sabertooth X99 i received 2 yrs ago after the original one killed itself along with the CPU.

Currently it runs fine at all stock settings. However any core OC will lead do random freeze on desktop. All 128GB RAM are still recognized just fine. Would it be safe to put everything back together and try one more time? Or better RMA again? The error msg I was getting was WHEA or something like that.

Man X99 platform surely has been nothing but trouble.

Holy shit. That was the spot where the old Fury X leaked and dumped on my MoBo. God damn it.

The FuryX AIO had tube crack at multiple places and was loosing liquid, causing higher than normal temp and eventually the pump just crapped out last year. I paid Sapphire to have it fixed since it was out of the 2 yrs warranty.

Maybe the chip has slowly degraded overtime to the point it's not stable with anything over stock clocks. Perhaps the board accelerated the degradation?

Hopefully your wrong cause otherwise the OP isn't going to be happy. If I remember correctly the first board contributed to the sudden death of the first CPU. There's a prior thread here at the forums when that happened.

dont hold me to this but brake cleaner may clean those pins up, i had something simler where water had been spilt on a board and left and after a few sprays thay come up like new.

I wouldn't dwell on these photos regarding how the socket looks,
just add some more voltage, or better cooling, try to stabilize any ram overclock you have, the operating system updates can cause it to be more sensitive to overclocking or undervolting, like happened for me. sometimes it is time to dial back a bit, start a few steps below your OC, and get to the point you are stable for weeks running 24/7. Whea errors indicate the cpu or it's subsystem aren't happy with the demand you put on them. sometimes they manifest as cache hierarchy errors in event viewer, pointing to some sort of memory corruption, which has more causes altogether.

My x99 previous system , for instance, was very stable, it depends on the board design and implementation.
So is my c612 based system (x99 southbridge). I hope your RMA goes well and problem will be solved

They might deny the RMA due to water damage.

Zen2 will not be water proof either.
IMO water cooling is not worth the risks.

sometimes it's mandatory, like i cant use air coolers due to ram interference, would be too clumsy in my dual socket board, so i use 2x AIO, i beleive the technology is safe by now, also less heat to adjacent components, quieter, smarter.

How the actual f**k is your GPU spilling coolant on your mobo, somehow Intel's fault? Sounds like you should more be blaming Sapphire...

he was talking about other problems he has had with the mobo as well, also we dont know it's the coolant. the system works, which suggests not a hardware issue

I don't have AIO on the CPU. It was the AIO on the GPU. The AIO tube was right next to the D15 heatsink. The GPU was fine minus the tube cracking and pump dead. Sapphire put a new AIO on there for ~$70. Then I kept using it until September last year when I switched to the current GPU.

The CPU has always been cooled with D15. And yes with no CPU core overclocking it boots just fine. With RAM running at XMP speed it also boots and works just fine. When I OC CPU to my usual 4.2GHz it would lock up randomly. Haven't tried lower OC to see if the symptom improves though.



Seriously do not want to put more money into the X99 platform after my original X99 crapped out in 2017. Also do not want to go X299 due to all the Intel security problems and etc. Need high core count for sure so it seems I will probably limp along the way with default system performance until next HEDT platform refresh comes over.

anyway, your system works at xmp, if anything was wrong with the socket it wouldn't have POST at all

Yeah the FuryX was so f*king strong it just won't die. At a time I noticed the GPU core temp was constantly hovering 60~70C during gaming with the fan raising to >1200RPM, very loud! (With the new pump it wont go pass 45C during gaming with fan barely spinning over 1000RPM) I gotta say despite the crappy AIO they put on there, AMD surely built that card to the best possible quality they can.

Good to hear that if the socket has problem system probably won't even boot.

Isopropyl alcohol can clean up electronic circuits. It just have to be the highest purity, like 98%.

The CPU power pins might be still functional, but at the limit. Raising the current draw (OC, high usage) might put the voltage drop over the limit.

That is fine, i have access to molecular biology grade isopropanol, which is 99.9% LC-MS certified.
