Doom 3 was horrible. Glorified tech demo at best + it had nothing to do with the Doom everyone knew.

Anyone else bothered by the fact that you're immortal during executions and nobody's shooting? Kinda goes against the whole "back to the roots run and gun".

That "fatalities" are scripted which grants immortality for some seconds because player loses control over his playable characters and simply watches the scene. Sometimes these processes are interruptible other times player has to mash some buttons. I guess this trend came from consoles (especially PS2 era from games like God of War and so on).

You know those people that have 15 minutes of fame because they can't adapt with the times and keep trying to cling to past accomplishments, that's Id. Like Croteam did with Serious Sam, they keep clinging to the same game, same content, and same mistakes that go with.

Never played any of the previous ones, but was Doom always supposed to be like Quake or UT? Reminds me that the new UT is still coming along.

Doom is Quake's spiritual father. Diabolic creatures, run-n'-gun philosophy, kickass atmosphere and brutality, lots of it (as far as technical limitations of that time allowed it to be).

Was Doom a legendary game? Yes, it was, it is. A really small team of programmers managed to create a groundbreaking game. Many things were 'borrowed' from Doom and made their way into Quake (BFG, plasma gun etc) and many other ID unrelated games. Many games had references to Doom or easter eggs.

For example 'the damned' in Tomb Raider III had Lost Soul (an enemy from doom) on the back of their coats. Some other games had vacuum door lock sounds from Doom. Long story short: Doom is really influential shit.

And no Doom wasn't supposed to be like Quake Arena or UT. Original Quake reminded of Doom just like Quake 4 resembled Doom 3.
Original Unreal was some kind of Quake 2 but with bigger and more "open-world" architecture.

Hell yeah. I was playing it when it came out, I can certify Doom was the real shizzle dizzle at the time. Nothing has really advanced that far in the genre since IMO.

It started out as a mere arcade room clearing game. It wasn't until Doom 3 that it was given lots of lighting and shadow detail, pacing, and horror atmosphere.

This one seems to try to mix the two together, but from what I've seen of it, all the atmosphere is gone now. They should have just evolved what they did with Doom 3.

I'm not sure. I think they are trying to go back to they're roots but building on the Doom 3 experience?

Roots would be good. Lots of people seem to forget that much of Doom was spent looking down a poorly lit corridor with noises coming from the walls. There was actually tension.
You'd have door traps, the sense of fear when a lovely shiny gun was presented to you. You kind of knew that if you pick up that gun, something bad was going to happen.
It wasn't constant slaughter but when it was, it was lots of it.

To me Doom should be a tension filled, atmospheric FPS horror game. It doesn't need a story, just atmosphere and a sense of isolation. Making it a simple multiplayer gorefest is bland.

Doom 3 wasn't far from roots. Sure, story was dull and boring but just like Carmack said "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important." Other than that Doom 3 was just like next-gen original Doom. It had all elements from Doom and Quake and something new. They didn't borrow anything from other games, it was quite a unique game. The first expressions from Doom 3 weren't really positive but later I realized that Doom 3 is a very good game.

New Doom has some "console-oriented" stuff like button mashing or weapon selection ring and all those pansy slo-mo moments and scripted scenes but unfortunately all modern games suffer from that 'trend'. But anyway I hope other than this new Doom won't have anything lame about it and I hope it will be awesome.

I already said they are trying to mix the two, but with such arcade gameplay and too bright lighting, pretty much all Doom 3's atmosphere is gone.

Quake Arena memories ....

If not for the knowledge of it being Doom, even the gore and demon references would have not helped me to recognize it. Rather I would have thought it was Quake 5.

Those are the campest looking space marines - those color schemes, oh my.
I can just picture it now, custom outfits and armor decals with every one having some urban camo blue and yellow looking armor. Yikes.

No way... this is not that close to quake... Advanced movement (strafe jump, circle jump etc...) has always been one of the corner stones of the quake games and the movement in this looks like it won't have anything like that...

Are we really going into a debate on how stagnate Dooms gameplay is? Aw hell lets talk about character development in Godzilla movies next!

Seriously you guys are missing the point of Doom altogether.

I know right. This was my first thought. I love how guys yell for more creativity in games, the devs give them something new, and then everyone including the people crying for change hates the game/series.

I play games because I like the formula the devs are using, and if I wanted change, I would be playing another game...

I guess it's safe to say that this Doom multiplayer has Quake/Halo/Unreal/AvP elements but I don't really care. As long as it has main campaign/singleplayer I won't complain.

I really loved Doom 3, hope this will not be some kind of Serious Sam game.

Not sure if you will be a happy camper then.

Serious Sam really is Doom with a different theme and lighter colors imo...

If they can recreate the immersion and spookiness of Doom 3, I'll be in it. I remember that game about a decade ago use to make me sweat with fear and anticipation! great stuff! but needed a good rig back in the day to fully enjoy it... 5.1 surround sound... yes please! and alone in a dark house... even better! lol...

Me too man. I used to specifically launch that game at midnight for early morning sessions with the lights off just to feel the rush as much as possible. That game scared the shit out of me more than any game ever has to date.

The devil is in the details though, and details matter a lot. Painkiller for instance is lumped into the arcade shooter category, with mindless hordes rushing you, yet it had creative and atmospheric level design, a good variety of interesting enemies and boss fights, a unique assortment of weapons, lots of secret areas and hard to reach power ups, and a momentum hop system to get to them. It was one of the mindless horde games that made you work out a unique strategy for each area before you approached it.
