I always used to think 27" 1440p high refresh was the sweet spot for me after tomorrow my first one from South Korea around 2012 or 2013, so the new 360hz OLED models would have been my dream answer even just a few years ago, but I am not so sure anymore.

I remember also really liking 21.5" 1080p on a glass panel, it had that perfect crispness to the picture, and the glass made the colors pop extra nice, but going to 23.8" or higher at 1080p just ruined it for me, just slightly more pixelated than I like.

Fast forward to today and I have experienced a variety of monitors, and I was intrigued initially by the 32" 4k 240hz OLED that converts to 480hz 1080p, but after watching Optimum Tech's video on it (link below), even though he really likes it, I'm just not sure its for me honestly. I remember many years ago I experienced a 29" 200hz 2560x1080 VA panel, other than the black smearing it was really impressive and I enjoyed gaming on it.

I think my new dream gaming monitor is a 29" OLED 240hz+ 2560x1080 display. I think that is the sweet spot for me, as I would prefer to hit 200+ frames in even AAA single player games for the enhanced immersion (60hz is fine for some people and nothing wrong with that, I don't mind 60hz on my Steam Deck). Sadly this resolution has been abandoned I think by modern monitor makers. I guess with upscaling 34" 1440 wouldn't be the end of the world, so I could do one of those 240hz OLED's next year. I also really like the 800p screen on the Deck LCD and OLED, they are decent experiences.

What are your opinions on the best monitor form factor/ration for immersive gaming? Everyone likes different things, no answer is right here, I am just curious. Personally, I kind of like that extra immersion ultra wide gives, slowly but surely it kind of won me over. I didn't think this was the route I would eventually go later this year or next year, but I am leaning more and more that way, especially if WOLED panels come. I think I would still prefer 29" 2560x1080 OLED, but I don't see that ever happening sadly.

I have a number of displays
  • 27” 4K/60Hz LG monitor for desktop productivity
  • 32” 1440p/165Hz Dell gaming monitor
  • 42” 1080p/60Hz Toshiba television
  • 55” 4K/120Hz LG C2 OLED television
and the latter blows everything else away for gaming/media consumption.

My place is small so 65” will be the future limit for me. But that’s as good as it gets. Gaming on modern TVs is so much better than on PC monitors.

I will never buy another PC monitor for gaming.

Even my Nintendo Switch and SNES Classic consoles are hooked up to the LG C2 set. This television is also connected to the best audio system in the house. So when I want to switch to television or a movie, I stay in the same seat.

Not 2560 x 1440 ?

no, I find 34" 3440x1440 to almost be a little too overwhelming for my desk area. I like the intimacy of 29" 2560 x 1080 form factor, and the picture is crisp as well.

I think you are experiencing the Godlike powers of OLED immersion. In this scenario any form factor I pick as my dream scenario would be a WOLED panel.

There’s always something better coming up.

No rush to replace this LG OLED set. But it will be replaced by whatever the hot new consumer display technology at the time is, whether it’s WOLED or something better.

But for sure my days of gaming in front of a computer monitor are behind me.

Hell, even browsing YouTube is better on the 55” LG set than on a computer. There’s a webOS YouTube app for the LG, I don’t even need to switch to the Roku. WebOS also has a Twitch app.

I bought a Marseille mClassic to upscale lower resolution content to 4K but in reality the LG C2’s processor does an admirable job at this. It’s almost as if LG hired engineers who thought of this scenario in advance. ;)

Happy to continue reading emails and Excel spreadsheets on my 27” monitor.

34-35inch ultrawide at 3440x1440 is perfect for gaming and movies but you can't watch 4K content.
42inch 16:9 at 4K is perfect for gaming but requires the best gpu out there in every gen. 4K movies look good but you have to tolerate the black bars.

I think the 42inch 4K is the best overall as long as you have space for it. Most of them have 21:9 modes for gaming anyway in case is prefered.

Well, I happen to be a big fan of OLED but, sadly, there are some on this site who insist all OLED monitors, including the latest generation, WILL suffer from retention issues. So be forewarned about that.

I have to say that LG in your video above seems very impressive - even if expensive. But as the reviewer noted, you in effect, get 2 monitors in one so the price becomes more reasonable.

My problem is, I don't see me ever accepting using just one monitor. I've used a dual monitor setup for so long, I don't understand how anyone can live with just one - regardless it's size. But that's me.

Also, any monitor I get MUST have a height adjustment stand. Not all do.

I also like small; my Dell P2214H is 21.5" and 2560 x 1440

EDIT: That should have read Dell P2416D and 23.8"

My place is small so 65” will be the limit for me. But that’s as good as it gets. Gaming on modern TVs is so much better than gaming PC monitors.

Smart TV, internal quad core or higher processor (mostly) devoted to displaying input video feeds when disconnected from internet.
If only they would add a PC monitor function tied to DP (or HDMI in settings) allowing monitor on/off functionality.
Even dumb tv were usually very good about handling resolution and fiting things on screen undistorted. Text in 4K on Smart TV is a non-issue.

65" is very nice from 6' or more away. I was struggling to wait for larger monitor and then again for them not to cost a small fortune. PC monitor get industrial and technical fields developments passed down to consumer level. Space Lynx is correct that 65" is a bit large for your average desk or workstation. By time this free 4K TV dies I hope to see a fully usuable replacement for gaming monitor.

I was leaning towards 42" 4k OLED for a long time too, but like you said its just so hard to drive. That's why I want to stick with a lower resolution and high refresh.

When I was looking for a large size 4K monitor. I found Gigabyte. They had 2 large models a 43" Mini LED model and a 49" OLED. I went with the Mini LED VA and have been blown away with the colours this monitor can produce. It is more expensive now since it launched but the new monitors at CES look like a new step in progress with 4K high refresh rates.

The OLED part is not even mandatory for me. If 4K performance wasn't an issue, I would not use my 32" 1440p165 and 27" 1440p165 panels for anything anymore over my 43" QN90B. Short of VR (which doesn't work for all games, obviously), the big screen immersion is unparalleled.

It's just that larger VA without a special viewing angle filter is such a dumpster fire experience, that it would have to be IPS (ADS-type in TV terms) at the very least. And OLED (WOLED) to be optimal. IPS is bad for TV usage but when used exclusively as a large monitor it is wholly superior to VA. But no one currently makes ADS below 55" size.

imo 4k120 TV VRR is also done somewhat better than monitor VRR/Freesync/G-sync. Even if the framerates are lower due to 4K, TV seems to handle double digit framerates better than the others (smoother experience).

If one wants to play competitive games, it's still worth it to keep a decent 27" 1440p165 IPS panel on the side, but those are cheap these days

My theoretical endgame would be:
- 27-inch (well, 26-28 strictly speaking, even though I run 32 now I do think that 27 is the best size for desktop use)
- 4K (that’s plenty PPI for desktop distance and my eyes, 8K wiuld be pointless for me and anything above 8K is an exercise in excess for no gain)
- 240hz (perfect refresh for everything, enough for serious competitive games and everything else can just be locked to 120 with VRR)
- Panel type will depend on what can be achieved. Ideally? MicroLED. If that turns out to be a dead end, then OLED, but burn-in MUST be mitigated to a point where even a decade of use doesn’t affect it. If even that doesn’t happen - a good IPS with FALD will do in a pinch.
- Semi-glossy coating. Reflections are annoying, but hard matte is ruining visuals. Could go for etched glass like the Apple XDR has as an option.
- Physical OSD controls are a must. No stupid remotes.
- Fully adjustable ergonomic stand, but that goes without saying. Pivot ca be left out, though, not much use for me.

Yeah I'm also in the 2560x1080 boat since early 2019 and I aint going back to a non ultrawide aspect ratio/monitor I think, love this thing for single player/non competitive games which is 99% of the games I play.
Sure it has its own issues with some content and games but most of those are fixable after a few mins of research/google,etc so I don't mind it that much.

I don't even own a TV and the way my room is set up I would have to re arrange my desk if I had to sit further from it if I had a bigger monitor or TV on it which I would rather not do cause I need my space in my room since I work out here. 'personal preference + no gym in my town..'
That and properly driving anything higher than 2560x1080 res is not exactly budget friendly in regard of GPUs so yea another issue for me since I tend to sit on budget-mid range hardware for years. 'my 3060 Ti is just about enough in new AAA games currently at this resolution with tweaked settings and DLSS usually'

Sadly yea this resolution has the least 'new' options, all I can find is the 200 Hz VA panel ones and I'm not really interested in the high refresh part but I wouldn't mind a better panel so ye an Oled or comparable quality 2560x1080 whatever refresh rate monitor would be my perfect upgrade if it existed.

I have a run of the mill 27” 4k. I also enjoyed my 23.8” 1440p monitor before.

personally for me being far sighted I would prefer dual 22”-24” but I’m only going to invest once there is something i really want and or need.

I have never experienced oled or fald but since a monitor has a 10 year life and mine is good I will keep waiting.

I mainly just use utilities. I’m fine with 16:9 however would prefer 16:10 or 3:2 like the ms surface. That would work better for my usage.

120hz would be nice as well. Don’t really need anything higher or unwilling to pay a large premium for it.

semigloss to gloss to minimize distortion and contrast, true 10-bit and no frc. Latest display connectivity specs, internal speakers a bonus,

so TL;DR
22-24” duals or 27” single
Maybe oled or high quality ips with fald
120hz refresh
True 10-bit no frc
Semi gloss to gloss aka minimal anti glare haze
External power brick
Internal speakers
16:10 or 3:2
Fully HAS or vesa mounting
Latest connection standards
3 yr warranty
Proper osd controls
Firmware upgradable
100% colour space rgb, rec, etc.
Swapable panel and controller as in if it dies outside of warranty be cheaper and or easy to repair

It's still a year or two off before I buy my dream monitor, but yeah I would not be opposed to getting a high end Mini-LED panel, it would need to be one of the top tier ones though. I think the point is moot though as monitor manufacturers are not interested in the 29" 2560 x 1080 form factor anymore.

@mechtech I tried a 24" 1440p 165hz Dell TN monitor like in 2015... I forget when exactly but it was a really long time ago. It had a couple defects on it sadly, which is why I no longer have it, but it was a decent monitor, I really liked the extra crispness without the performance hit of anything higher. I would not mind whatever form factor 1440p ultra wide is but at a smaller panel form than 34"

Could be an interesting monitor for sure.

I don't think a 21.5" 1440p has ever been made, so he must have mistyped something somewhere. That being said I really miss my 21.5" Dell IPS glass screen, it really popped in colors and clarity. I took it to grad school with me and it got damaged there sadly. Can't find monitors like that anymore. :(

OLED 25" 160 Hz 12 bit with 68 billion colours, and at 6K or more. Matte screen is a must because glossy introduce nasty reflections at all times, except 100% pure darkness, which I cannot achieve.

i'd love something just a tad larger than 34" 3440x1440p 21:9 ultrawide monitor... maybe at the size of 38 or 40
OLED would be nice and with 100, 120, or 144hz would suffice dont need more as i dont play e-sports titles anymore...
dont mind free sync or gsync but gsync would be nice but its expensive

reason i'd like to keep it under 4k res because with a high end gpu i can games at higher settings for longer than 4k monitor would allow me..
currently have a 3090 and it plays all the titles i have at near highest settings and over 100fps making my investment go a little further

OLED 25" 160 Hz 12 bit with 68 billion colours, and at 6K or more. Matte screen is a must because glossy introduce nasty reflections at all times, except 100% pure darkness, which I cannot achieve.

just fyi, there is a new gorilla glass that just recently came out that gives all the benefits of gloss and none of the glare. that would be my preferred option. matte still has glare its just not as pronounced, but this new gorilla glass eliminates glare entirely.

I am hopeful the Steam Deck 2 gloss version will use this glass.

why this ratio of 4:3? dedicated emulation?

seeing as how the monitor I posted before can switch to native 480hz 1080p and 32" 4k, maybe someday they will just design a monitor that can be native anything we want. That would be neat

That LG display isn't native doing "native" 1080p. It's doing integer scale while doubling refresh frequency when displaying 1080p at full screen size (we'll probably have to wait for TFTcentral or someone on their level to confirm this). That's why when you resize it to 27" and 24" it looks blurrier, because 4x integer scale does not apply anymore.
