Drive space mysteriously disappearing

My drive is nearlly full but as you can see if I check properties of all folders in C they only take up ~35GB :confused:

I've got hidden files displayed so I shouldn't have a massive hybernation file or pagefile or I'd surely see it in C:

I had a similar issue. Mine ended up being windows updates taking up space and a hibernation/page file. Disk Clean up worked for me - but it kept having issues until I finally reinstalled windows and now it hasn't come back. I find that a 120GB SSD for the OS drive and windows 10 is too small these days.. But gotta make do.

Just run the disk cleanup tool, and enable scanning of system files.

Also make sure your page file isnt sent to some ridiculous number, and disable hibernation if it isnt

Disk cleanup can free a huge 512KB!

I'll check pagefile + hybernation settings

Did you check the "Clean up System Files" That might have more findings.

You can definitely delete that AMD and Intel folder. Those are created during set up to unpack the executable. Usually they don't contain much data though. WinDirStat can find where most of it is accumulating.

Oh, empty your recycle bin! The properties on the left won't find that folder but it will show up on the right.

Also, hibernation file is a hidden system file. That isn't showing up either in your picture and could be partially to blame.

That tool says "programdata" is taking up 79GB, yet in the propertires in windows explorer it says 599MB!?!?!

I'll check it out further!

OK, there's an 80GB(!!!!) file located here
It's apparently a file which windows used for search indexing, wtf. Deleting now lol

The title brought back memories of running FTP dumps for warez groups when I was 12 LOL. I'd use hidden/invalid COM directories to hide the folder from system admins. Can't remember the exact term for it but it was funny watching the admins scratch their heads on what's going on with the drive space. Only way of getting into the folder was knowing the entire folder hierarchy which was posted to the forums.

I suggest you use a file/folder mapper. It'll scan your entire disk and visually show you files and folders that are occupying the most of your disk. This way you can pinpoint what's causing it by knowing where exactly these files (or data) is accumulating...

Run Directory Report as an administrator
That way it can find hidden files
It will show you where your space is being taken

Did you do everything I mentioned in my post though ? Because you should see results for previous installations ,windows updates ,things like that which will free up a lot more space . previous installations alone can go into the 20+ gigabyte area
