Hello, as of Sunday, I built a new PC and it was working great until Monday night when all of a sudden Windows refuses to recognize the already installed drivers for my gtx970. Perplexed, I reinstall several times through geforce app and directly to no avail. I wipe everything Nvidia from the computer and start from scratch and sure enough it works....for a day. Yesterday afternoon I try playing a game and get a hard crash, have to reboot out of it. Sure enough when it boots back on, I check the display driver and it's back to Windows generic.

At this point, I think Windows is at fault and I reinstall it from scratch. Install geforce app and drivers, everything looks good. Then I play a game and get a light blue screen of death. Try to reinstall drivers and get a green screen of death. Anyways, my question is did my card go bad somewhere down the line? I only bought it in October of last year and have not overclocked it. I'm going to try to install my old AMD card to see if that works. Please anyone feel free to offer insight into my problem, thanks.

Did you keep track of the temps of the card before it crashes?

This is what I'd do:

1. Make sure Windows Update isn't installing an older driver. Disable Auto-Windows Update and/or make sure it's not installing drivers.
2. Uninstall your video drivers via the Control Panel. Then, use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) and clean your old GPU drivers.
3 Download and install the latest drivers from Nvidia. Install only the display driver and PhysX software. leave everything else unchecked.
4. Test it out. If things are fixed, then you can try installing GeForce Experience if you want to. I prefer not using it.

In addition to erocker's comments:

Which version of W10, latest build install? Sounds like initial release issue of W10. Already a year old.
All the updates been applied yet?

I'll try that stuff you guys mentioned before taking the card out. The highest temp I recorded was only 54C, so I don't think it's a heat issue. Last I had all the updates to Windows applied.

Edit: first boot today PC looks like normal, then reboots on its own, locked into 800*600 resolution and no longer picking up the gfx drivers, lol.

@erocker, I looked into the update history and noticed it was unable to apply a driver update for the gtx970, however, it installed other Nvidia software (graphics adapter wddm1.1 etc). I used DDU, and installed the components you said to. It's still not picking up the driver. Looking it up on device manager it's giving me a code 43 error.

Update:

I'm able to install the drivers and the Nvidia icon shows up on the tray. However, on reboot it goes away and Windows doesn't detect the drivers as being installed and Device Manager shows a code 43. I'm guessing this has to be a hardware issue...

maybe try installing ONLY the driver, not the GE ? Ge gave me issue's in the recent past with Both of my 970's, on a win 10, and a win 7 machine as well. i did eventually get them to play nice with Gexp, but i remember it being a problem, just foggy on the specifics.

that reboot stuff in your recent previous post doesnt sound good tho...:twitch:

Yeah, I've heard about people's issues with Geforce Experience, I never had issues with it until now. I tried installing without it to no avail. I am now trying my old gfx card (HD6950).

For what its worth(@zippo) im sorry its givin you so much of a headache, hopefully itmisnt hardware relted.
I saw you posted no temps over 50'ish....seems low for gaming, i wonder if your comfortable uninstalling the gpu,and removing the shroud, cleaning it,and reapplying TIM?, cant hurt, unless of course its not a familiar process 4 u.a good ole reseating has fixed more than a few issues for me in my time.

Sorry im not more help, best of luck.:toast:

I appreciate the help. The reason the temps didn't get high is because I was in-game for a total of 2 or 3 minutes, so that's not unusual. Ugh, it just gets me that on Monday night, I'm playing TW: Warhammer and here I am now...

What sucks is I have this week off and I spent half of it dealing with this issue. Anyways, the old AMD card is working and the drivers are sticking around after a few reboots. Gonna try gaming today and see if it holds up.

So what Bios? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5481#bios

Anything on this page not applied? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5481#utility

Intel VGA driver conflict or not turned off in Bios? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5481#driver

Try disable BigFoot LAN driver in Device Manager? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5481#driver

Conflict or mismatch Bios setting is what I'm thinking.

MBR or GPT partition?

Not using EVGA Precision are you?

No evga precision here. Using default BIOS. I don't know why that stuff would happen after the fact though. Everything worked great for a day until this madness kicked in. I doubt it's a integrated gfx conflict because the integrated didn't show up on the display driver. Not to mention nothing is conflicting with the AMD card.

Make sure that your motherboard has the most recent bios as well. I'd flash if not.
Reset Cmos, and set it to factory defaults.
Reseat the GPU.

Graphics card issue won't be helped by flashing anything.
Sounds like the Vram is affected.
Try that card in another system if you can, or have it tested in a shop.

I'm just gonna RMA the sucker and let MSI figure it out. I got another card working so I'll just deal with potato quality in the meantime
