Hi, I've found this forum to be useful in the past so naturally, I decided to ask here first :D

Anyways, I've found something wierd that happens with my reformats... if I install Windows XP (without SP2 already on it), my driver cd for the Intel D865PERL board shows up and installs everything normally. However, when I install with a XP with SP2 already on it, the cd fails to start up (the intel sign would show up, then freeze for 30-45 sec and then say that the "internal process timed out"). My question is, is there any fix to this? I have a serious problem to this because my SoundMAX 4XL driver (for the integrated sound) is on the cd, and because I had reformatted using the XP with SP2 included, the cd would not start up. Also included in the cd are the chipset updates and the driver for the integrated LAN (which I got off the Intel website).

Is there any difference to "licensed/licensing" versions of XP and "unlicensed" versions of it? I have reformatted using 6 different copies of XP (2 unlicensed w/o sp2, 4 licensed w/ sp2), and I was wondering if that had anything to do with it... any help would be appreciated :)

System specs (if needed):
P4 2.8E w/ HT
Intel D865PERL mobo
2gb Corsair XMS DDR-400 ram
Sapphire x800 GTO
80 gb WD on IDE
160gb WD on IDE
200gb Maxtor on SATA

The only thing I would recommend is just mannually installing the drivers instead of using the cd autorun program.

Go to Control pannel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device manager.

Find the devices with the yellow (?) (Other devices) right click them and click update driver. Click no, not at this time for windows update, Install from a list or specific location. Check the box "search removable media" and try next, it should find the driver and automaticly install it. I do this instead of using the on cd menu program.

As for the windows licensed/unlicensed the only difference is you cannot activate therefor you can only use for 30 days / and you cant use the windows update or any genuine download from the ms site. You can get time lifted with programs but its not really allowed to talk about them here.

Also, 32-bit windows and 64-bit windows needs different drives - just a note...But if your going from 32-bit WinXP to 32-bit WinXP SP2 there really shouldnt be a problem with the actual drivers working.

If that still does not work, try to download newer version of the driver from the manufacturer's site.

Thanks for the suggestions... Intel won't let me download sound drivers (particularly SoundMAX), so atm I'm stuck without sound. Hopefully the cd will run soon, but if not, I think I'm just going to have to buy a sound card... can you recommend anything that is within $60-80 USD?

a cheapo (lower end) creative card will work just fine and not cost much..
