Hello,
I own a GTX 1080ti HOF Lab Edition, with which I want to use a second PSU to support the graphics card since my HIPER 680W MKII turns off when I overvolt both my cpu (8700K) and this card. Overvolting just the card or the cpu works - but not both.
I have a spare Corsair 650W that I'd like to use along.
My question is; which of the 8-pin power connectors are the safest to connect the second PSU to? All 3 maybe? When turning on the PC there's going to be a delay in between the power-ons of the main system and the supporting PSU.
Buying an overly expensive 800-1000W PSU is not an option for me.
It's a shame owning the Lab Edition card, running at 7C idle, 16C full load and be limited, because of not enough power!

I hope there will be a solution and hopefully this might help others save money and possible excessive power-draw accidents.

Load balance your rails better.
You should have no problem running that rig on the Hyper alone.......unless it's just plain worn out.
Don't dick around with dual PSU's. It ain't worth the trouble.
Just get a decent one and get it over with.

The Hiper 680W MKII's were released in 2008 - Id say Its been beaten down a few times.

Running the card is no problem of course. Been running fine for half a year now, with the 8700K @5Ghz. Overvolting this card, though, even with the CPU at stock voltage, the PSU switches off.
When you refer to trouble, do you think that the module posted above will still elicit risks?

As an owner of it for 11 years now I can vouch for its rigidity next to my abuse. Been overclocking with it to failure every second month all those years. It was even loaded with big furballs of husky hair at times, resulting in overheating and shutting down, but each time, after a cleanup, always as good as new. Been seeing other people's PSUs giving up on them in matters of months, with the most light of overclock attempts.
I really wish to hang on to it, if possible - which is also good for my wallet too.

That's a little bit more than what he needs. He just needs to get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Splitter-Hamkot-Adapter-Motherboard-Extension/dp/B074DQJY8K/

After 11 years, I guarantee it is just plain tired. The caps are starting to go. If the Corsair is newer, you might even just have better luck using the Corsair 650w by itself. Either way, after 11 years, it is time to retire the old girl.

I mean, you're using a $300+ CPU, and a $600+ GPU, and you're complaining about having to spend ~$100 on a new decent PSU to eliminate the risk of frying your whole system. It doesn't make sense.

If it cuts out when you overclock it means your PSU is on its last legs and you risk it blowing and frying everything connected to it. I checked your spec. it should still be within 500 or 600w easy at the most.

Cleaning it might make it look as good as new but everything inside that powersupply is most likely mush by now. the fact that you got 11years out of it is amazing but its time to put it to rest and get a new power supply.

You are playing a serious game of roulette with your hardware everytime you power your PC on -- which includes that 1080Ti. Even though you plan to hook it up to a different powersupply, that 1080Ti is still plugged into the motherboard which is being run by the tired powersupply.

ITS TIME FOR A NEW PSU! dont risk the other components in your system. you have already gotten your moneys worth out of it so let it retire.

With that level of hardware as everyone has said, having a middle range PSU is madness.. Get something decent and you'll have no issues at all. Something like a 650w or if you'd like to add another GPU later an 850w or maybe a 1000w unit would be a much better option. Personally recommend an EVGA G+ model which is gold rated. Very solid PSUs and work really well. I have several :) I'd consider those at a minimum.
Having middle range PSUs are not the best idea if they are struggling to put the amps out (12v line) and if the PSU goes and takes something out, then you'll be worse off again as you'll have lost the 8700k and the 1080 Ti or the whole system. Never skimp on a decent PSU, with all the protection circuitry built in it'll save your bacon and the PC if something goes wrong.

Thank you all for your advice. For starters I'll plug the Corsair, to be on the safe side, until I can afford a bigger one. I'll also see how it fares in regards of overclocking. Somehow I doubt that the VS650 will be able to support a 1080ti @2.3Ghz plus an 8700K @ 5Ghz.
I'll let you know of my progress.

Why not just leave everything at stock clocks till you can afford a decent PSU? Its not as if youre going to have to play on low or medium settings if you dont OC your CPU or GPU. The VS650 is at best rather basic of PSUs but it will run OK till you get something better. It will probably run better than your Hiper as its newer and 'fresher'

The VS650 should do okay, specs say 50A @ 12V Max so it's probably closer to 45A (550W) continuous for extended periods. Might handle an OC on both the cpu & gpu.
That said it is a bit old and not really of great quality, a modern psu that can output an actual 650W on the 12V rail continuously would power it OC'ed just fine.
