Dual PSU testing and questions

Hey guys. I have a proprietary HP motherboard that I am working with. Currently, I am waiting for an adaptor from China taking forever to get here. I would like to use my new power supply and the RX480 before the adaptor comes. Could I use the stock PSU for power to the mainboard and then run the second PSU just supplying 8 pin power to the GPU? by jumping one of those ATX pins that turns the PSU on?

Any risks?

I've done that before and it worked just fine.
I was going for max overclock I was suspecting that my PSU is not providing enough power so I added another one for the GPU.
I didn't gain anything on OC though but it worked just fine.

You need to startup the GPU PSU before you start the pc or the GPU wont be recognized.

Is this true? Wouldn't the card be recognized anyway via the PCI-E bus and just draw power from the second PSU?

It was the case when i did it and if you turn off the GPU PSU first it will BSOD.

If your existing Motherboards 24 pin connector is a different layout to the ATX standard, it can be changed by removing and moving the individual wires in the connector.

if you look around, probably do some googleing you can buy a plug for the psu that will have extra wires coming off so when you push power button it would trigger the 2nd psu. Instead of running a 2nd psu should just use a psu that is strong enough to run the gpu as it would be less of a headache and less issues.

"Adapter" is the concern. Just get the correct PSU. But not everything comes from China.

Honestly thinking about sending the adaptor back and running a dual PSU setup here. Right now, I have the OEM PSU just powering the mobo and CPU, while the accessories and RX480 (that I am typing on) running on the OVGA new PSU with jumped pins to turn it on. I may just wire in a switch and have 2 PSUs, instead of using this odd adaptor I bought. Do the PSUs intake heat through the large fan and expel heat through the rear?

ALSO, my new XFX RX 480 has the dual BIOS. How do I know which setting is performance vs stealth? there are no labels

The PSUs usually expel air so that it is removed from the case rather than blowing it in.

GPUZ will show a difference in which BIOS you are running when you flick the switch. Flick the switch when the GPU is off.

You can do it while its on.. the BIOS is only used for boot.

On motherboards, I would switch while its on to flash the second BIOS. Same with GPUs. Even if I wasn't flashing, I would switch, then power down.

Thanks guys. What am I looking for in GPU-Z?

Project update. Decided to run an external PSU to power this. Please let me know if this is feasible.

OEM PSU --->> ATX POWER (HP proprietary) and CPU power ONLY.

EVGA PSU ---->> RX 480, and fans and SSD and HDD.

Any flaws in my logic here? The PC would actually look really sweet with the second PSU mounted fan-up on the top, with a slot drilled to fit the wires. I will wire in a hard power button to turn the second PSU on.

ALSO: OH BOY THIS THING BENCHES GREEEEAT !!!!

Why would you run an external PSU to power this??????? Makes no sense.... and IMO, would look terrible.

If you are looking for a BIOS version in GPUz, it says BIOS on it... lol!

I understand, but what BIOS am I looking for, its just a string of numbers.

To refresh, the reason I require 2 PSUs is the i5 mobo from an OEM PC I am upgrading is not standard ATX, so I would like to run a second PSU externally, mounted atop the case, or on the floor behind it, running the wires in via an empty PCIe blank slot.

My question to you guys is, does it make sense running it in the way stated above? or should I just have the RX480 itself on the second PSU with a switch?

One could solder wires with a molex (to wich I made molex-6pin peg)connector on the other end that is if psu is up for it, i know I did it to a 9years old passive pfc Delta electronics as it lacked a molex.230w OEM powering an am2+ nf4 ,x2 4000+, hd6770,2 hdds, wich I think still powers neighbors pc i3 Ivy h61, hdd, odd, entry level nv gpu,no complaints so far.

Theme moded my current psu with red 6pin peg,blue 4+4pin eps connector, did not like the verry thin qires it came with.
Consider risks.

The stock PSU is rather weak, so I would only want to run the basic lower power parts on it (CPU and Mobo)

Looks like the setup is complete. Mounted the new PSU side mounted on the case. looks mean, like a supercharger coming out of the hood.

Cannot for the life of me figure out what this BIOS switch does, as GPUZ shows the same string of numbers regardless of position.
