I did a quick search and did not see anything. The news came out end of May. Apologies if this is a repost.

Well DDG was always about a fake privacy site, the company actively "filtered out" aka censored sites and search terms waaay before the March scandal, it'd be no surprise if it was bought by MS.

Oh well. They searched only through bing and then filtered. Startpage.com (was also ixquick.com) is better, searches with google, gives more results without tracking.

Just to be clear for everyone else who thinks DDG was bought by m$, it was not. The whole article is about cookie tracking on your Andoid or iphone, not the DDG desktop browser ( i froget if there was one I dont use that anyway), its a back door deal that finally come to light, it obvious the people that knew about it and didnt report it.

It didnt affect me so I thought nothing of it.

I'll give it a go, have known this about DDG for a few months now and noticed the searches aren't as good, more ads etc
The only annoying thing is I can't seem to set it as default in Opera, I've added it to my search engines and it works searching from the address bar using the KB shortcut "s" before searching, just a minor annoyance to try and always remember, though repetition builds habit

Here's a fun one for the rest, it's classic so you might know about it already. Go to Bing and DDG and search for happy white woman in the images search, compare the results.
There are other terms you can search for but we'd start going into heavy politics, both engines track you in the same way so you might go ahead and use Bing, enough with the fake privacy crap.

They are talking about a DuckDuckGo mobile browser and browser extensions, not search. Just go to the website and search.

It doesn't matter, they filter search results based on their political ideology. I chopped them off several months ago.

I don't know what you wanted others to notice, here's what I notice. Cookies get deleted every time I close FF, which is often.
Bing: three screens down, and most results are stuff that women should buy so they can be happy, and make their babies happy too. Elderly women filtered out. Elderly means over 40.
DDG: Stuff that women should buy is filtered out. Elderly women can sometimes be happy to, even if rarely.

Meanwhile google gives me... happy white women with one or two confused black ladies?

The odd out of place black folks are probably showing up because google was recently shown to have been having discriminatory results against POC, but overall it's way better than what your "free" search engines give you.

Who defines what's fake news and what's not then? under what criteria? just because john doe is from X country then he's automatically lying and spreading fake news? search engines are biased, *all* of them not just duck duck go, that's what happens when information is centralised and there's a bunch of guys stating "oh this must be true" and pin it to the top of their page for everyone to see when they search even for a silly thing like happy white woman.
The first result in that query is 105% fake news under *my* criteria so if say I had a search engine I'd remove it, why? because I can. But what if other people don't think that's fake news and want to read it? I'd be affecting their experience on the internet, who am I to do that?

That's the thing. There is no "my criteria" in a fact check. You are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.

I was recently playing around a bit with the Firefox Add-On "Search by Image" where you can do a one click search on 8 search engines.

Embarrassing results, exept for Yandex. I don't know what the Russians are doing, but their image search is just above everyone else.

That's not how a fact check works, at all.


That's the thing. There is no "my criteria" in a fact check. You are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.

Because "fact checkers" are definitely not paid by corporations to vehemently defend their political interests amidst [the current thing] we're not in an utopia, everyone has a price, and when the briefcases start hitting the desks they're the only fact that matters.

In the end, search engines are pointing people at what to read, listen and watch, ultimately telling them what to believe in, the words fake news or disinformation are no accident, in the us vs them that seems to be taking over the internet those words are powerful, because they imply "our" thing is the truth and "their" thing is false and dangerous.

Not everything is a conspiracy (fact checkers in particular I do not believe are "bought" for a second, this is a new fake news age narrative), but there are conspiracies that have done the world significant harm in the past decade. Absolute freedom of speech online has proven harmful to society, as humans are mostly too dumb to choose fact from fiction when they prefer the fiction. That's really as far into this as I can go.

Political opinions don't tend to be profitable, but keeping society stable does tend to be. Fact checkers operate in that realm, where facts work, 2+2=4, and society can stand on it's head without believing there are child sex farms on the moon. The interest is a publicly shared one.

Yes. They openly admitted they're fully on board for 'controlling misinformation', and soon after even more aggressively were censoring search results.

I have no single preference search engine any longer:
For technical things and products, Google is hard to beat. For everything else, every single search engine (that I've tried) is utterly broken or non-functional.

I almost got a bingo at the top, all the cool ones are there, only missed flat/hollow earth, reptilian overlords, moon nazis and NESARA I dunno what that is. The rest of the levels are meh or too exclusive to the US.
