DVD Driver now only reads CDs?

The DVD Drive on my laptop stopped reading DVDs and now only reads CDs. Someone mounted a driver on my laptop to play a game and that's when the issue started. I've tried to update the driver, uninstall and reinstall the driver, and the operating system has even been rebooted since then. I've tried the Microsoft Troubleshooting Services, (http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems) and it says that it recognizes that there is a problem reading the DVD, but does not fix it. This is the only program so far that has even said that there is a problem. I would appreciate any help! Thank you!

Why not just do a System Restore to a point before the suspect driver was installed?

Daemon Tools was used to mount and I didn't use a restore point because the OS was rebooted before I had the chance, which cleared the restore points.

See if you can maybe find a firmware update for the dvd drive and run that.

+1 to a firmware update. IIRC, Drivers for a DVD player/burner are for the most part universal and included with the OS, so I do not understand how DaemonTools could affect it.

Good Luck. And welcome to TPU :toast:

Edit: If firmware doesn't work try uninstalling the DVD Drive via the Device Manager and then reboot. Windows should find the right driver upon reboot.

Try to uninstall the optical drive in the Device Manager. Navigate to your optical drive in the device manager - right click - uninstall.

Once the optical drive is gone, right click on your computer name at the top and select, "Scan for hardware changes." This should reinstall your optical drive.

I would do this before performing a firmware update. Plus, firmware updates are sometimes hard to find.

Good luck.
