This is all very strange now. So yes, this is happening. I'm ... parted on this. The reasons for doing it is sound (in short, healthcare, and they're Americans so yeah), and given their track record I am extremely sure they will donate superflous money as they say (because Tarn Adams is one weird dude). I'm not a big fan of Steam though, mostly because I live an largely offline life and Steam is not exactly designed for that sort of thing ("here, lets que 20GB of updates on the games for which you'vechecked the "check for updates only when launched" box and no you can't play them until you've updated them and we don't care about the "metered connection" nonsense even Windows cares about have fun except you can't, you worthless piece of humanity you OH AND THE SUMMER SALE IS ON PLZ MONEY I NEED IT BAD MAN GIVE IT TO ME WHY WON'T YOU GIVEME MYMONEYFCKKKYYOOOUUUUUUUU *knife fight ensues*"). Anyway.

It will bring "graphics", "sound" and "improved UI" to the game. Graphics is just another word for "not having played DF enough", and the UI is fine up to a hundred dorfs or so (when scrolling through names becomes a chore).

In short, I have no idea what to make of this.

Hang on, I'll call Sweeney to make this exclusive to EGS, so you can be confused more.

But what's stopping you from installing the latest non Steam version and leaving it at that? Is the game not finished enough? You can also run two versions and compare from time to time.

Parted or not, its their product and they want to extract some money from it... not seeing the issue here.

I admit to not checking the link (at work), so am confused a bit. DF has been free forever, hasn’t it? So is it now going to be free on Steam or are they selling it through there?

It'll be free forever in its non Steam version (Classic), the Steam version will be like $20. What the differences will be exactly I do not know, apart from graphics and sound. You can add tilesets to DF already, but I imagine the Steam version will be a bit more polished, possibly.

It's not an issue, it's just a bit weird for me. I'll explain why later when I have time, but the gist of it is that DF has always been one of those exceedingly rare almost "pure" games. The free version will be around forever, but it feels like the end of an era, in a way.
