EHi, i have an GA-965P-DQ6 motherboard and a c2d e6600 and using the stock intel cooler it idles at are 65degrees and can go upto 75 underload

I cannot fit my akasa evo 120, because there is a heatsink on the back of the motherboard blocking the backplate from being fitted.

i have even used artic silver 5 and it has had no affect to the temperature

I have made sure the cooler is fitted correctly but no luck

cheers in advance

You need airflow. 1x120mm and 1x80mm is a basic config for some airflow.

yowzers, I wouldn't even run it at those temps, dangerous
get some AC in the room immediately and until then explain more about why you can't used a new cooler and if you can please take some pictures as it would help us to better assist you
this would include your application of thermal paste, pics of retention brackets, etc

50-55 under load is safe... Try to stay below 60 topps if you want your CPU to last till your next upgrade though. Make sure you have good airflow in your case. Also you should fill out your System Specs under UserCP.

If you want to learn more about cooling and airflow, check out a couple of sections in my guide (link in sig). Glad that new cooler is keeping your CPU within range, but if that's stock speed then that's still way too warm. I've seen many run cooler under load with a stock 6600 and stock cooler. Hope that helps! :toast:

My e6600 @ 3GHz is idling at 22c and maxing out at 45c - did you use some proper thermal compound on it, have you tried reseating the heatsink and do you have any airflow at all? :p

I am getting readings of 55degrees using coretemp, whcih apparently doesnt measure the cpu temp only the core.

i downloaded everest and it displays my cpu temp as 40degrees, which is safe

40C allows for overclocking. You really need some airflow though. 75C stock cooling is pretty bad.

Get a new cooler if your temps are in that range.

C2D's are good for OC-ing because at least in the lower end range (my experience) they can decently OC with no CPU voltage increase. I am fortunate with my 6300 1.86 hitting 3.36 without increasing voltage to the CPU. If I want to go higher then that, I have to increase voltage, and my AC FP 7 starts to get more heat soak and becomes less efficient. Just remember that case airflow and IN vs. OUT ratio are important when cooling and overclocking. And that overclocking your CPU also OC's other components such as the NB, memory/cpu bus, memory, etc. Maybe for starters increase your CPU voltage by 2 steps, increase the FSB by 10-20, go into windows, Orthos for 20 mins, if pass, rinse and repeat. Find an OC level that is stable and that you're content with. If Orthos fails (use Small FFT's, Priority 9 for max CPU stress), then increase your FSB/NB/CPU voltage by 1 notch when getting into higher FSB.

You should set a goal for your OC, also disable any power saving modes, lock your CPU multiplier, set PCI to 33.3, PCI-e to 100, etc. If you want more suggestions for preperation and stressing, check out my guide (link in sig), there's also plenty of guides just for Core2 OC-ing out there. Hope that helps! :toast:

cheers for the help i might wait till ive got a better cooler before i try overclock, must have a faulty cpu fan or its been wrongly fitted about 7 times :/

Every else in my case is reasonably cool

x1950xtx 512mb PCI-e runs at 50 under load
GA-965P-DQ6 is constant 30
Case temp is 28

I think i will wait to get a new cooler before i try overclocking

cheers for the help everybody and thanks for the basic overclock guide kursah
