It has been some time since posting here, don't get a chance to hang out much any more - maybe stop in to read the Kreig tribute thread or Nasa pictures.

However I bring a peculiar one to you today

E7250
I7, 8gb single stack RAM

Left it on for a few hours recently and came back to it being powered off. Thought it was on standby/sleep however it would not respond to normal power button presses.
Took it to the charger and plugged it in - still would not power on.
Then noticed the blue ring light on the charger lead was not visible. Changed chargers/adapters and the light came on again. Plugged it in, tried laptop and it didn't turn on.
Eventually I realized that after a moment the light on the charger would go out. Tried the charger on a second Laptop and the light did not go out.

Initially thinking this is a power jack issue, I took off the rear case cover, unhooked the jack from the mainboard and tried it again. The adapter lead stayed on. Plugged the jack into the mainboard again and it went out.
Sadly, seemed a mainboard issue.

Rather than try to find what could be a short circuit on the board, I got another mainboard[with fan assembly and WAN card included] (apparently tested and working by the owner).

Upon receiving it, I plugged it in - adapter light stayed on to which I thought "progress!"
I then tried to power it up, and I got lights and a fan spinning - more progress. Yet that lasted for about four seconds, with some blinking white lights. No POST screen or splash screen appears, and it shuts off.

Then there is a white light sequence of :

  • Storage(the cylindrical left side icon) - Solid
  • Battery with the electrical/lightning bolt - Blinking
  • Wireless antenna - Blinking

There is no amber or red at any stage.
The pattern to the blinking is not diverse or varied. It's a standard one on one off, with no eventual breaks(say after ten blinks). The time is about two seconds per blink.

From what I can find, the above LED combination points to a RAM/Memory issue.

Thus I moved the RAM stick to the second DIMM and started again.
Same results except this time the wireless antenna LED stays solid.

Checking the LED diagnostics chart again, that indicates still a RAM issue - that the modules are detected however encountered an error.

I removed the RAM stick, cleaned it, compressed air etc. Still no improvement.
I went and got another RAM stick from a laptop and tried it - same issue.

We returned the mainboard and got another, connected it all up - exact same symptoms.
Repeated all of the above troubleshooting with no changes - and the laptop does the same thing concerning the LED blinking when you have the RAM in DIMM slot one or two(solid/blinking/blinking vs solid/blinking/solid).

As a last resort I removed the RAM, WAN card and SSD. Powered it back on and same results, same LED blink sequence.

Unless I've received two bad mainboards(thus having three in a row), and /or somehow have two faulty RAMsticks - I am at a loss of what to do next.

Know that I have done the process of removing the battery and the mains lead then holding the power button for thirty seconds or longer, and as well as removing all the components one by one.
Regarding the battery itself, this happens with or without the battery inserted.

Suggestions welcome - what would also be useful is to know whether the laptop(s) will not POST if any component is missing such as WAN card, RAM etc. Throughout this time, there have been no audible beeps or sounds leaving me with the impression that the unit is quite modular in that it can POST with bare minimum components, possibly none at all.

Tear it down to it's most basic components (cpu, mobo, ram, power adapter, usb KB & mouse and external monitor) and then test it.

My current Dell N5110 did something similar a long time ago, turns out the keyboard was shorted out and preventing it from starting properly.

E7250s are Dells

Been there, done that

Think about in it's most simple terms : I ordered a replacement motherboard that comes with fan assembly. I put in my RAM, plug in the power and connect to external monitor over HDMI.
Then the symptom(s) I describe occur.

Seems obvious it's a faulty product/motherboard.
Except yet then to buy another one from a different seller and have the same exact symptoms.
Additionally the error diagnostic codes indicate a memory issue, possibly more on the board itself.

Either they're both broken, or there's something missing that the laptop requires in order to post. Keyboard? Default display screen? Battery?

Try 1 ram module and hook everything up to the bugger

You mean differently than I did previously? Multiple times? On two different mainboards?

I mean fully install in the chassis, 1 ram module at a time, try in both slots even

Ah ya, been through that, even took them out of the chassis to avoid shorts where possible, as Dragoon was eluding to.
Maybe I really got two bad motherboards and the sales were dishonest.
