I'm running an intel e8400 processor at stock speed with stock cooling. My temps were 39-40C for the cpu and 55-56C for core #1 at idle and the core voltage set to 1.15 V. Under load the temp would reach 58 for the cpu and 63 for the core. Are these temps too high?

I tried setting the voltage lower too 1 V. Then the temps are 33-34C for the cpu and 51C for core #1 at idle. This is a bit better, but I'm still concerned as I've heard rumors of processors having problems reporting temps accurately. I feel uncomfortable having to undervolt my cpu in order too make the temps "normal" but it seems stable. I ran it under orthos for the 13 hours and the max cpu temp reached was 50C for the cpu and 60C for core #1.

Well the E8400 stock cooler is about as bad as they come. The temps may be reading a little high but it sounds about normal with a stock cooler. Have you tried using RealTemp?

Installed Realtemp. Realtemp gives a core temp of 42C which is much better

I'm just worried because I heard these new cpu's are supposed to be cooler than the 65nm

The previous temps I measured were with everest. My bios also gives similar readings. I'm running a xfx 780i 3-way sli motherboard. could it be that there wrong?

RealTemp sounds right on.:) They do run cooler, but Intel made the stock heatsinks much cheaper. Go figure... If you can find yourself something like an Arctic Cooling Freezer pro. They are inexpensive and work incredibally well.

But remember the cpu is currently undervolted to 1V. I'll set the voltage up and see what it gives.

cpu set to default voltage of 1.15V. According to Realtemp idle core temp now 46C.

Sounds about right. With a good air cooler those temps would be around 15c - 20c cooler!:)
