ECS Reveals Its First AMD Kabini Motherboard - KBN-I

Elitegroup Computer Systems reveals its latest Mini-ITX motherboard family KBN-I featuring the world 1st Quad Core SoC (system-on-a-chip) processor with the newest "Jaguar" 28 nanometer architecture. The ECS KBN-I integrated AMD Quad Core A6-5200 APU with AMD Radeon HD 8400 Graphics, supporting new generation DirectX 11.1 graphics. The ECS KBN-I with official Windows 8 WHCK certification (Windows Hardware Certification Kit) allows users to take full advantage of the touch browser and function-oriented design of Windows 8. The KBN-I is optimized for home entertainment, general computing productivity, and multimedia applications.

Up to 25% More Power Efficient
Designed to save space and energy, the ECS KBN-I is the ideal solution for small-form factor systems, with the AMD Kabini Quad Core SoC processor and maximum of 25W low power consumption. It improves power efficiency by up to 25% through clock gating and unit redesign compared with current generation low power platforms. Thanks to new generation design, increasing the amount of cores, instructions per clock(IPC), and boost clock speed, the ECS KBN-I reduces energy usage by operating at lower frequencies. The ECS KBN-I also has a 9W fanless Heat Sink design, full electrostatic discharge protection and 100% solid capacitors to maximize the reliability and longevity of your system.

Excellent Expansion Support
Even with its Mini-ITX size, the ECS KBN-I meets the expansion needs of future-proof minded customers. ECS KBN-I supports video and storage upgrades with 1 x PCI-E x16, 2 x SATA 6GB/s connections, 2 x USB 3.0 ports and 4 x USB 2.0 ports. For industrial applications, the KBN-I is equipped with Serial port output (COM). The Mini-PCIe slot is designed for laptops and other small-footprint computer systems and supports two Mini-PCI cards (one full-card and one half-card) for mini-Wireless, mini-TV tuner and so on. Moreover, users can enjoy high definition media as the KBN-I supports HD 1080p output including HDMI and standard analog D-Sub VGA output. The KBN-I is bundled with additional software including Norton anti-virus, Muzee, Cyberlink Media Suite, and the ECS iEZ utility, which combines eBLU BIOS Live Update Utility, eDLU Drivers Live Update Utility and the eSF Smart Fan Utility.

I wouldn't mind one with a mini-pci-e SSD. Would make one heck of a HTPC. Is there a release date/seller anyone knows of?

Nice, maybe time to lose the old VGA connector though.

It's a nice little board.
I almost didn't post the PR, considering how it's written, but I liked the board and here it is. :)
ECS is pretty bad about that. Hopefully Zotac will pump one out as well. I would rather have that version, but worst case this should work in a low profile DVD-player like case.

Nice, maybe time to lose the old VGA connector though.
People still use the damn things....

Is Kabini just good enough or just not good enough?

Kabini is excellent for many applications including HTPC, laptop, etc. Special versions are used in the Xbox, PS4 and Wii.
Its definitely "not good enough" for laptops, especially when compared to the Intel U series. Graphics card not powerful enough to play current (and demanding) games, and processor not powerful enough to do the occasional heavy workload. Other people might disagree of course. What I am interested in is HTPC for transcoding and miniserver (which should be good enough).

Minecraft server anyone? I can think of tons of uses for something like this, hell I'd "upgrade" my parents to this if they wanted to. I.E a E8400 still surfs the net like a boss.

Do you have any idea how much power a minecraft server needs?

How many people? I wouldn't be running a server with more then 8 people on at a time, as a personal server for personal online friends. Minecraft is more dependent off of the RAM is my understanding.

My Core 2 Extreme X6800 @ 3.2GHz struggles with more than a few people and Dynmap. Plus, my CPU gets about 25 GFLOPs in IntelBurnTest when my AMD E-350 1.6GHz got like 3.5 GFLOPs. Good luck.
