Got a newsletter from EKWB regarding their M.2 heatsink.

here is a link to PR:

Looks pretty much like any other small form factor M.2 heatsink available on market.

This one has a backplate. And an expensive EK logo.

quoted price for black heatsink is below 10Euros so not exactly expensive. that backplate is certainly a nice touch considering only other heatsink: Aquacomputers m.2 micro only includes a thermal pad for the components on other side of ssd.

I have one of these inbound and will be here Monday. I had other stuff coming from them so it was a cheap add on and looks decent. My only though is how hard it will be to get that damn tiny retention screw back in place with the heatsink being in the way a bit!

Don't buy them They will make your ssd retain more heat I tried it, as there is no active cooling it doesn't really works out.

Interesting - Could be. Would all depend on location of the drive in relation to airflow. If it is mounted under a video card or below - may not work at all. In my case, the drive is above the GPU in decent airflow. The heatsink is not active in its cooling, but your case should be with good airflow inside :)

My machine will be up and running by tonight hopefully so I will run a few tests to see where she sits transferring a few large files. I do not expect idle temps to change much but peak temps should in theory. Will run those same tests once this little heat spreader / quasi heatsink is in and installed.

Most do not realize how friggin tiny a NVMe / M.2 drive is until you have one in your hands. Knowing this - this heatsink is SMALL. When they refer to these drives as "sticks of gum".... well, that is pretty accurate!

I touched the heat sinks to see if they are effective and they are as they get burning hot to the touch but still after this they just sit there being really hot and heat is retained. Then I blew cold air on the with a hairdryer and they quickly dissipated heat, so no active cooling is the problem. My suggestion is not to buy them at all.

You demonstrated that they are working by increasing surface area for heat transfer but not at their optimal potential due to a lack of airflow. So your suggestion is to not buy them even when it's evident that they are better than nothing? :wtf:

If it wasn't hot it wouldnt be working, as it is a passive device to move heat away from the controller into a much larger surface area. Much like the old passive heatsink for ceramic encased CPUs.

They are not better than nothing because they are not really necessary and also they are not better than nothing because there is no active cooling just as any other standard CPU-air-cooler. When there is no active cooling they are as good as nothing. Also case airflow is not good enough to act as active cooling because I tried it. Those things need good direct airflow from a fan blowing directly at them. So you see now there are useless at least for me.

So in other words, it would work best with a little fan on it.

Thank you yes, which in other words means that they are pretty much useless and they do even more harm. I think there was a technical test for this exact thing and they proved that heat sinks are doing no good. It looks cool but it is not practical. I tried them because they were only like 8 euros/piece and I purchased 2 of them and that is money for toilet paper :) I just wanted to test if it is better with or without them.

It's a heatsink, here are some actual numbers rather than the results from your human thermometer test. Regardless of airflow the bare chips are not dissipating heat faster than or at nearly the same rate than having them on, so it's baffling that there are claims that they are doing harm unless those remarks were aimed at another make/model that trapped heat instead(looking at you MSI, they at least they got the name on the product right).

So you see now there are useless at least for me.

Then speak for yourself instead of claiming that they don't work.

I don't say if they work well or not but if I were buying one, I'd probably put a small fan on it to make active cooling, which should reduce the SSD's temperature.
Active cooling is always better IMO.

If it had a wider surface area it would probably help dissipate heat faster. But then again. Those would not fit in the standard m.2 motherboard slot.

Maybe people are better off putting their m.2 card in a pci-e adapter and using it that way

Good luck with that, you know you have temp reading from the actual drives right? LoL

Yes sir - I can view the drives temp from onboard the drive itself. Measuring minimum and maximum temps before and after. I also have a thermal imaging camera so I can actually see what is going on.
