I believe they are trying out things called heat pumps but I'm not sure how much of a success that is... If anything...

I still am a firm believer of solar on each house, a 3kW system wouldn't take much space up and everyone would have 'free' power... Cause isn't that what they want us to do, renewable energy etc.? Or would that mean the big firms would loose money..... ummm.... Such a tuffie....
They are, but whilst in the future they will no doubt become cheaper, currently they are around 3 times more expensive than the boiler equivalent with installation and in a cost of living crisis not just caused by energy prices uptake during the next 3 years or so would I guess be limited................. apparently, the average saving when compared to a modern boiler would be around 15% so the challenge would remain that people buying these at current prices would not be intending to move home for at least 10 years.

Heat pumps are very common in north America and parts of the Orient.

They are comparable in price to a Split air conditioner with a gas furnace - not a heating only system.

When your daily summer temperatures are >35C for 4 months straight, you need air conditioning.

A new boiler system (complete) is probably comparable to a heat pump, at least on a larger house. However, retrofitting is much harder.

Heat pumps are around 260% efficiency as a rule of thumb. Boilers are mostly 95% if you get a nice one. Below are some calculations:

34p (electric price) divided by 2.6 (COP of heat pump) means that for heating your house by 1 Kw will cost 13.4p for electric.

10.3p (gas price) divided by .95 (boiler efficiency) means that for heating your house by 1 Kw will cost 10.8p for gas.

The advantage is having A/C so you can weather the hot months (at the cost of more electric) if you want.

In the UK, you use hot water radiators? That will come with a pump energy penalty, but comparable to the fan on a heat pump or furnace.

The thing is, many appliances that use heating use straight resistance heat - which costs 34p to heat by 1 Kw - for example a stove, oven, clothes dryer, erc. Changing these our for gas versions will reduce energy use by 70%.

I'm not sure about the heat pumps yet as they are massively expensive over here still which I think @Tatty_One has mentioned already but we seem to be getting hotter summers and such, so gas boilers not really ideal for cooling things down as such so... lol

I look forward to seeing some real differences in how we get our electric, heating, hot water and such like.. It would be good to have a good shake up :)

I mean this is my Threadripper system trying to do a bit of folding and crunching together... Wonder if that will warm up the house cheaper than using gas....... :D :D

Power definitely not cheap here.. With the solar panels its OK but its the UK, mostly more cloud than just good sun sadly... I've had most of the rigs I can on working today but you'd possibly be surprised that when your folding as well with the GPUs, 3000w of solar power, doesn't go quite as far as you think it will... I'll try and get a list up at some point :)

due to heat in my state.
i had to power down main folding and boinc rig.
normal it would suck up 900 watts.
but due to running air more and such.
i cant run both folding and air at current cost atm.
atm as of writing this am running both but i am testing a re put together card.

It's been damn horrible of late in the UK for the heat and even more so with no wind, so its been worse than normal... I will spread some news about soon as I've been able to catch up with my contribution threads and I'll report back here!!

Well longer than I ever thought I'd be but I'm here again :) Apologies for the delay everyone....

Right, so quick update... I was with Bulb, they went bust and I got moved over to Octopus. I think I've been with them now, a good 10 months or more... (Just checked, February this year....) and a few months in on it I went to find this Agile tariff which as I had a smart meter fitted to the house (not sure if that was a smart thing to do or not but.....) when that got done after a few weeks they had moved me on to this Agile tariff which changes prices every 30 minutes for the electric. The gas, stays as the same price for a whole day.

There's generally a few times in the day that it gets expensive, generally breakfast time (so say, 730 maybe to 9 or so) and then again at 4pm till about 7pm.. It might differ a bit with the times but the prices are generally higher at these times.. I've grabbed a couple screen grabs from my phone for the prices today (18/11/23) and tomorrow .. You find out around 4pm every day what the next days prices are going to be...

Screenshot_20231118_234915_Octopus.jpg Screenshot_20231118_234934_Octopus.jpg

As you can see the price does change a bit but I think with the solar panels I have and possibly I'm looking into battery storage, this will work out very well for me :)

I do have a referral link if anyone would like it, but rather than advertise it on the forum, I'll ping it out via PM. It will basically allow you to switch over and earn yourself and me, £50 credit for signing up to Octopus. I've currently had two of my friends switch over, hopefully they are as happy as can be when having to pay for electric and gas with them :)

Generally the average prices for the days compared to a standard fixed tariff I'd estimate to be about a 1/3 less. As I say, sometimes, days are very expensive and other times, they do literally pay you to have the electric on, which is great for anyone with batteries that need to charge them up..

Anyways, that's my news and my PCs are now crunching and folding together :D Hopefully helping and saving someone! :) Or a load of people for that matter..... PCs currently taking a fairly decent load of 840w ish according to my little Tapo plug... I'll grab some screen shots for you all in the morning :)

I hope that helps!! :)

Well as it turns out there's a bit of a bonus for tonight and a lot of tomorrow, free electric... So I'm guessing I'm going to get all the PCs on and such, crunching away!! Sadly I'm missing a 3070 for the moment, but I hope to be able to make a bit of an impact :)

Thought I'd share this with you all :)

I did something kinda crazy yesterday, so I'll share that with you all soon :) Be interesting to see if everyone has the same sort of issue :)

Right here we are again, just getting sorted out with things going on as its Christmas :)

So, the crazy thing I've done was to be able to get all of the PCs on over night. Sadly I never tried the two Dell servers as well, this was just the PCs I had on for a bit... So, over view of what was on....

2 x 5900X + RTX 3080
3950X + RTX 3070
2700X + RTX 3070
2700 + RTX 3070
8086k + GTX 1080 TI
1700X + GTX 1080 TI
3970X + RTX 3090

One of the rigs above were just running FAH (8086k) but the rest was running everything as far as possible. I had noticed that some of the CPUs had got 100% loads on them, I believe WCG wasn't downloading as much as it normally would do for some reason but they where all on :)

I managed to grab some photo's from our SMART meter, I found them pretty interesting but at the same time, scary! :D The reason for that was the sheer power that these few PCs where taking...

20231224_080746.jpg

And with other things sometimes going on, but nothing more than usual, here's what was used in a single day...

20231224_235929.jpg

Now generally, I try and keep to about 5 to 10kW used a day, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw nearly 70kW in a single day.... Now I will mention that its not including everything on ALL day. Over the course of the day, a few of the machines where shut down (I had a few upgrades to do :)) and I did eventually turn on the two Dell servers, I had them working I think for about 6 hours each?? As mentioned some CPUs where also not folding 100% of the time, but the power usage, I was stunned by..
If I was on a standard UK tariff for electric, those 70kW, are roughly chargable around 28p/kW I believe... That's a total of £19.60 for just the day.... I think had I been running everything here (including the servers from midnight) and had my other AMD build running with another 3080 (for folding again :)) I believe a 100kW could have been sucked from the grid :) Sadly the solar was not great and it basically sucked.... As you can see from the screen shot below, the price of electric was some what cheap for the day :)

Screenshot_20231223_180226_Octopus.jpg

I did shut off folding and most of the hardware about the peak time so I think it was roughly 4pm till 8pm? Or just after.. However the one thing I'm very happy to mention was the FAH total I was able to produce, which was just shy of 20 million points and I think I was quite close to @Norton with WCG points as well, which I thought was amazing too :)

I'm extremely grateful for all this hardware I'm able to use, so any times that I find out of a price drop etc., I will be putting things on trying to make as many points as I can :) Just like tonight, there's another price drop from midnight till about 9am, so I've a few machines on again tonight that I will leave on to help our amazing TPU team and the projects that I'm currently supporting :)

Thanks for reading and getting this far, I just wished to explain my madness for the day :) Any questions please fire away!! :) Until the next time!!

Eesh. And people in the USA think power is expensive. Ours is $0.1048/kWh USD

I wish it was that cheap over here!! I hope it drops down further but I'm not sure when it will happen.. I think there was talk that it was dropping I think in April, but...... We'll wait and see... Here's hoping that when I get the bill in a few days, I can see how much its cost me running the hardware like I did!! :) I'll report back ;)

And with other things sometimes going on, but nothing more than usual, here's what was used in a single day...

And whilst I remember this, I had my bill through for the last month, this is what it actually cost me for that days running....

Does that include your solar offset?

Yes :) Downside was that there wasn't masses of solar then anyways, so it wasn't much of a problem really... I produced about 3kW for the 24th December... It wasn't a great day for solar....

Mhhm, here you can choose which Energy you get. In my Case its 100% Energy from Water- and Wind-Energy. Its still expensive but much cheaper than 2022. For West-Europe its not much - thats true. The Government told us the Renewable-Energy will get cheaper in the Long Term. I hope its true. The Nuclear Energy needs Water for cooling and the Summer was hot without Raining in France last Year. Thats what they say here in the German-Media.

We currently have 19 atomic reactors in France. We sell our surplus energy to Europe and Germany is one of the biggest buyers. It seems to me that your government is totally smoking you out at the local level.
Nuclear Plant.jpg

To say that the weather is warmer in France because the power plants use river water seems to me to be an exaggeration. This is global warming. You also had more or less hot periods even after the dismantling of power plants. Well-controlled Nuclear Power is the future, not reopening coal mines like Mister Olaf Scholz is doing.

There are 8 billion of us on Earth and specialists speak of 9.7 in 2050 and 11b for 2100.
The development of regions like Africa will lead to unimaginable demand for infrastructur..
According to a study carried out in 2017 by French ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency), a 2.5 MW wind turbine can produce on average 5,500 MWh per year in France. In comparison, the average nuclear reactor in France has a production capacity of 900 MW, or 7,884,000 MWh per year. Using these figures, we can estimate that around 1,432 2.5 MW wind turbines would be needed to replace an average nuclear power plant in France... However, this estimate does not take into account variations in electricity production linked to local weather conditions, nor the costs of installing and maintaining wind turbines.
Of course nuclear plant is only viable with a close water source to cool the reactors...
Nuclear is a necessary evil with our current lifestyle :(

But watching the News we will all go down soon with WWIII

I'm paying 0.27 Euro for 1 kWh. Its Germany and its 100% Renewable Energy.
I know why Germany's power is expensive.. And it ain't the renewable energy. Its Germany's stupidity on getting rid of their nuclear power and imposing taxes galore on any electricity usage in an effort to push through energy efficiency.
