Eliminate the Thanks/Post Count for General Nonsense Posts

I agree with the OP. Both post count and thanks should be omitted in such sections of the forum.

Agreed ,makes sense to remove them for wat is essentially a Tech based forum,the other forums are secondary to me and i rarely visit them.

Graphics Artists Utd. is in the wrong forum, to begin with. It should be in the Clubhouse forum, for being the kind of thread it is...a clubhouse for graphics artists who do free service. If/before the thanks button is removed, ask a senior mod/admin to move it to the appropriate forum.

It's cool BT, no need to fluff Wiz up, he can do what he likes, for better or worse.

I'm listing out his long-term plans with that forum, nobody elses'.

Actually, it has been brought up before. It was determined to be "too much work", not worth the effort, if I remember correctly.

i think we should have a youtube style system really... each post gets either a thumbs up vote or thumbs down vote. each thumbs up will add a point, each thumbs down will minus a point. this way, we will actually be able to deduce the quality of someones' posting.

i doubt that would happen. a simple countermeasure, would be for mods to disable people from rating others, and retro actively negating their scores. That way abuses lose the system, while the people using it correctly are left to use it as intended.

its not like the thanks button is abuse free

on youtube, i think it works preety well.

plus, if a post gets more then a certain number of thumbs down, its actually miminized.. this is how youtube fights bad and spam posts.

There should be minimal moderator intervention with user-rep systems. User rep is what users decide amongst themselves. There's no way you're going to find out who gave a thumbs up or who gave down. If there's a display such as "who thanked", it will only clutter the place. End of it you're left with no real measure of a person's rep.

yup people would just negative the post just for fun. Or people sign up just to create multiple accounts to give a negative ranking on a person just because he didn't get his computer case didn't arrive on the right day.

Well just my wee 2 cents on this but I don't agree.

Many times people make posts in GN, posts to ask for advice on a personal problem, or a family situation, or school or work....
They make it in GN because there is no other sub-forum (and there shouldn't be obviously).

Many people who make these types of posts are very grateful for having support, help, or even someone who listens.

Well, maybe I'm a bit on the romantic side, but that's how I think about it.

I don't know why it is there in the first place but there is nothing in the GN thread to disqualify its use--especially consider the button is still present on threads that have been closed. It's pretty sad to see a mod get thanked for censorship that doesn't violate any rules. It seems...backwards to me.

You dont need to REMOVE THE BUTTON, just dont count the thanks in the thanks count.

Keeping the button is important. Even in GN, it is nice to give (and receive) thanks. It also saves spamming a thread with "I agree". Allow the thanks, just dont tally them in the total.

I am going to disagree with removing the "thanks" count from GN.
The reason is that when a person thanks you for a post, it is a simple way of showing that their post was in some way worthwhile to you.
It does not indicate technical excellence, but it does show that someone found your post useful, or positive in some manner.

I do not think that TPU needs any kind of "reputation" flag or indicator. When people post questions they will try the given solutions and will come to a conclusion as to who posted the needed information to solve their problem. There is no need to pat people on the back for this as that is what we are all here to do.

The "thanks" count to me is not an indicator of my ability, but a quick way to see if any of my posts are making a difference to anyone in any way. Many times my "thanks" count has increased and I've had to go hunting to see why. This helps me figure out what posts are most helpful to the TPU community at large, and also help me eliminate my more worthless posts (yes, we are all guilty of that).

I vote leave the thanks system just as it is at the moment.

Some really good stuff does happen in GN. It's not always funny stuff.

I swear some times I do think don't thank me for that post, and almost add it to the end of it from time to time. But I never have said it.....

We should be given the choice to remove a thanks for a post that you made.

exactly also as many posters have said before in this thread, there are perfectly valid reasons why someone would deserve a thanks in the general forum. i dont think there is any reliable e-penis counting system, the more people look at one number, the more it will be exploited.

about that you tube/digg style voting: i wish there was a plugin that could add this feature to vbulletin. but so far there is nothing
