I actually still have the disk of the first release, AFAIk. Did not play it quite a while, lol. Be warned, the game is pretty tough at medium difficulty. Beginners best play on one of the island map types.

Since it's DRM free (as all GoG stuff), even if you have it you could get it and give it to someone for Christmas.
(We, of course, know you would only give the one copy away and then delete it from your system because you hold yourself to a high standard of ethics.)

Calibrate your expectations. Remember it's an old game now. Expect a bit of fun from a game with some charming if dated graphics, a few not so innovative anymore innovations and genuine good ideas, and you should be pleasantly surprised. Expect an AOE killer with flawless controls, and modern RTS conveniences and you might be dissapointed.

It's the best EE game ever. EE2 was alright but EE3 sucked. Just be careful with the AI--sometimes it is very stupid and sometimes it can slaughter you with ease. I think water being between you and them is the largest factor in determining which way it will go.

Also, if you're looking to play online, I've discovered Tunggle/VLAN works best.

You tried at 18:44. That's why it didn't show up as free. It's too bad, but even though Empire Earth: Gold isn't free anymore, it should be half price... I'm almost positive it was one of the games listed in the 50% off holiday sale.

Yeah I haven't played the sequels, but I've heard that the first is the best. I do seem to remember the AI being a little wacky at times.

Is there an attack move command like in SC? I tell my guys to go attack and the enemy I click on runs away so naturally they follow him all the while getting picked off along the way lol.

You can put them in different stances: scout, guard, aggressive (thus follow any hostile combatants/civs until you say they should not) and one stance I forgot. Archers are best put behind a wall with any gates locked and the archers' stance on "guard" ("guard" gives them the orders to attck and than deploy again at their last idle location and the locked gates prevent them trying to leave your fortifications when fighting).
