Now I don't know if those are all unique users or they are counting just accounts where some people have multiple accounts. But still there's no doubt that EGS has grown very fast.

From the article:

"the team will extend its free games program to 2020. Not only that, but Epic Games will sign up more exclusive deals in 2020."

"In 2019, Epic Games gave away 73 titles as part of its free game program."

"Going into more details, third-party games made $251 million on the Epic Games Store in 2019. According to Tim Sweeney, this figure is 60% higher than its initial forecast. In other words, and despite the harsh criticism, EGS was a big success for Epic Games."

As for new games appearing exclusively on the Epic Games Store, Sweeney had this to say:

“Exclusives have been critical in gaining momentum in the presence of a competitor that began 2019 with more than 90% market share. Securing exclusives for Epic means we can significantly assist developers with product funding and invest in marketing and awareness knowing that these efforts bring in new customers to our store, rather than just sending more business to the incumbent.”

That is pretty much the only reason I have an epic account.. my kid was into fortnite, but is still a bit too young for it. He might go back to it later. But I still grab the free games, that's pretty cool. I already have a steam account, I cant see myself investing in multiple platforms if I can avoid it. Can they be the one to topple the giant? You never know.. but my inside voice says no :D

Originally I created a EGS Acct for the free games, Subnautica was being given away at the time, so i kept adding the free games even if I never played them.

I haven't spent much on EGS. I've got 15 games there but only bought 2 and spent a grand total of $10.

EGS Launched in Dec 2018 - Its now 2020 and they still aint got something as simple as a shopping cart despite what happened last year with people getting banned for making multiple purchases one at a time.

tbh there's simply no reason that EGS doesn't have a shopping cart by now. Every Web Store that I use has a shopping cart. It can't be that hard to add for a company that has programmers that can make the Unreal Engines and games. It's been changed from 6 months away to "Future Development" so who knows when that feature will be added.

People laugh at them for this. I know it's not a big deal but the way I buy games is to wait for a big sale and buy multiple games. A Shopping Cart just makes the transaction faster.

They have been giving away some, not all high quality games for free. I think this has contributed a lot to users signing up including myself.

So far I pretty much only used my store account for one purchase. Rest of the titles I own there were from the weekly giveaways. The one I bought and also the only one I played so far was an epic store exclusive.

I do have a question about these game sites. Do they all receive game update /patches?
It seems the build need to be a little different for each site. I would think steam has the highest priority when it comes to updates.

EDIT: One more thing I like about Epic games, you can start most games without using the Epic launcher. Just create a shortcut from the game folder.

I'd joined EGS to get Metro Exodus back before it was launched, since then, I'd bought four others games. I've downloaded about 15 free games, so I guess you can say I support them with my hard earned cash to some extend.

I think you have to launch the Epic Game Launcher to get the updates/ patches unless you've got it set to auto startup on boot. I have accounts on Steam, GOG, Origin, UPlay, Rockstar, MS Store and EGS but Steam is the only one that I have set to auto start on boot so it updates my games automatically.

I have to touch upon this little thing here:
Going into more details, third-party games made $251 million on the Epic Games Store in 2019.
Is that the total amount of money the games made selling for $60. Total as in for the devs and Epic (with their 12% cut), or is that the total amount of money Epic made from selling the games (just the 12% income).
Because if it's the first one, then it's really unimpressive.
A bunch of AAA (and AA) titles launched on EGS exclusively in 2019.
$251 Million, with $60 per game, cause let's be real the vast majority of that is from the big hitters, leaves us at roughly 4.2 million copies.
Big hitters:
Metro Exodus, Borderlands, Control, Outer Worlds
And then some "smaller" titles:
Outer Wilds, Entire Quantic Dream library, Phoenix Point

If it's the other one (only 12% or less) then it's an unrealistically large number of roughly 35 million copies (if my math is correct).

Also they celebrated 100 million users, meaning the average user spent $2.5 on non-Fortnite products. Which is also rather low.

I took it from the wording of Sweeney's complete statement that is how much he is saying EGS made from their cut:

"Going into more details, third-party games made $251 million on the Epic Games Store in 2019. According to Tim Sweeney, this figure is 60% higher than its initial forecast. In other words, and despite the harsh criticism, EGS was a big success for Epic Games."

Publishers/developers apparently get quite a lot of money from the free giveaways. I don't have specifics...but they're doing it because it benefits them too.

Well, I don't know for sure but Sweeney made a statement a while back that Metro Exodus was selling very well and that's just one of their exclusives.

EGS needs the momentum so every number they produce is questionable, but might also be very true. If I take a step back and look at my own stance towards the store; I like the free content, the Store doesn't bother me to the extent I want to run away... but it isn't far off either, because man those game pages are horribly low-info density and do actually miss info. Not a big fan of the layout, responsiveness of it all. But then, for me its just a place to go into, click Buy and leave.

Playnite handles the rest from then onwards.

EGS is trying to compensate for their free giveaways with higher base pricing on games and DLC, too. And they've got a much more strict lockdown on keys and regional sales, or it just hasn't taken off yet. Its much harder to find cheap keys for EGS released games. If Sweeney can keep that up, he will keep the business because that is what devs will prefer, as they get more control over their content pricing than Steam can offer. And then, in the end, we simply haven't got a choice and EGS will be a success regardless of whether we want to. We just have to buy stuff there. This has already happened and it will continue. It falls to Gabe then to respond, really. It already does.

But the biggest bonus in this whole ordeal is for the smaller and indie devs I feel. The exposure they get compared to Steam is tremendous, its a totally different ball game for them. And on top of that, they see a much larger cut of sales. This is fantastic for PC gaming and I want this to happen and keep going, and will support EGS just for that.

Sweeney calls steam "incumbent " as if they are some sort of tumor that needs to be removed...

EGS Launched in Dec 2018 - Its now 2020 and they still aint got something as simple as a shopping cart despite what happened last year with people getting banned for making multiple purchases one at a time. He's been smelling his own fart for so long his head has replaced the lump in his throat.

For all the things they lack, they offer 18% extra income to stakeholders. I think that'll suffice for now. And towards us, they compensate the shortcomings with tons of free games. You can ride EGS for the next few years easily on free content alone... I'll definitely take Sweeney's farts over Gabe's procrastination, because honestly, the fat turd fell asleep long ago and I haven't seen him wake up yet. That Half Life VR fart isn't it, either, is it. I mean really, where is Steam going now? Its the same shit it was a few years ago and we get occasional noise about review bombing issues. That's about all she wrote. There are zero new solutions or ideas to combat Steam's problems (content overgrowth being a big one), all we got was a fugly Library.

Yeah but why not say, EGS earned 251 mil from selling third party games, why phrase it like that. The way it's said makes it appear as 3rd party games made 251 million for themselves and EGS in total.

EGS is trying to compensate for their free giveaways with higher base pricing on games and DLC, too.
Publishers set the price, not EGS.

Yeah but why not say, EGS earned 251 mil from selling third party games, why phrase it like that. The way it's said makes it appear as 3rd party games made 251 million for themselves and EGS in total.
The source doesn't cite its own source and there's no broader context to try to figure out what Sweeney was talking about. If he was talking about Epic Games financials (which really is the only thing he can talk about), then $251 million is what EGS received from third party sales on their platform.

Wow. Did it come with "free" games too? That'd be something.

I look at Epic like any other Gaming platform. I do believe and subscribe to the thought process that if they did not offer free games they would not have as many users as they do. I do believe the $251 million number because I have bought 1 game on Epic in 2019. So far in 2020 though I have gotten Jedi Fallen Order (using my free $10 Coupon) and Control (WOW!!!) as it is 33% off on Humble. I think they will have a much better 2020. I will say that I appreciate Epic for linking up with Humble Bundle, truth be told Humble is my main source of games today and is for me the best way to build a nice library without losing your shirt.
