I guess you can call me weird, I never ever had a printer... At home...

The best printer is located at work, always full and has the best price per sheet ratio... Zero :D

as other posters have pointed out this has been going on for ages. I had a canon that did this and it had little chips on the cartridges. A little jolt in the right spot on the chip and you could reset the cartridge to use the rest. The only trouble is you had 20% remaining and the software said you had 100% remaining and if you forgot and what you were printing was urgent...you'd have a bad day.

Yeah with the Epsons there's a 'resetter' that you could buy for like $10. I used to use it with real Epson cartridges and get another 50-75 pages.. Not sure of their efficacy anymore because as I said now I buy remanufactured cartridges which have their chips very closely calibrated to the ink level.

On this particular printer maybe, but consumer grade printers use 'counter' chips to keep track of how much ink it has used. There was a class action against Epson a few years ago over how the chips were 'undercalibrated' and left significant amounts of ink in cartridges that the printer deemed empty. I noticed that subsequent cartridges that I bought after that settlement no longer sloshed when "empty" - so either they put less ink in them or raised the drop count that each chip allows. Now that Monoprice carries refilled high-capacity cartridges for it for $4 apiece I don't care anymore.

That's nice. We aren't talking about consumer printers here, so pointless.

I'm sure they could put a protection algorithm in the firmware that would shut off a pump if it ran for more than x seconds trying to prime. But to waste $500 worth of ink out of every $3,000 cartridge set (11 colors) is pretty ridiculous. If your company goes through two sets a month that's $10,000 a year in profit right there that you've just pissed away.

It isn't about priming, it is about running out during a print. With the current design, there really is no way to detect when it is out of ink if it was pulling the ink bags down to a vacuum. These printers tend to print very large jobs as well, some taking hours to complete. Not loosing the print and having to re-do it, wasting hours, is worth a lot more than ink. So running out of ink mid print is universally bad, best case you loose a print job and worst case you burn up a pump, so it is much better to error on the side of caution.

The Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits that very situation. The manufacturer is not allowed to dictate that you only use a specific brand of consumable as a condition of warranty.

Yeah, no it doesn't. The Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act states that manufacturers can't require branded parts be used with the product. However, the manufacture can refuse warranty service if they determine the product was damaged by use of non-branded parts. So if your shitty re-filled ink clogs the printhead on your $6,000 printer, don't expect Epson to fix it under warranty.

This issue has stopped me from buying a laser printer for my brother. Everything just counts pages, and then demands a new toner cartridge even if it's still half full. It's hard to figure out which printers have magic button sequences that reset the counter.

Every Brother printer I've encounted has a "continuous mode" that you can activate that makes the printer keep going no matter what. Some of them you can only activate after the toner/drum warning has come up, but they all have it.

I have a Brother HL-1040 that a neighbor gave me ... 20 years ago? It finally ran out of toner this month!!! Printer manufacturer's nightmare, haha.

Other people are, so on topic.

Sorry but to say a 20% unusable product loss is a "safety margin" in a consumable that costs $3,000 a pop is ridiculous. They are selling you 700mL cartridges and telling you that you can only use 560mL of it. It's either a serious design flaw or straight up deceptive marketing. It's like buying a gallon of brand name milk at a premium price, but when you start using it you find that you can't drink the last quart because it's sealed off in an inaccessible compartment, and for "safety" it has been treated with something that makes it smell like cow shit.

First of all, Magnuson puts the onus on the manufacturer to prove that the consumables caused damage - which they basically can't. Since 3rd party ink from reputable brands is made to the same standards and formulations as OEM, unless you send it back to them with the 3rd party cartridges installed they wouldn't even know.. Second of all, if you buy the 3rd party cartridges at $1,000 a set, you could buy a brand new printer every year and STILL come out $4,000 ahead. So.. Yeah.

Unfortunately this is a common trick from printer manufacturers. HP and Canon do the same and it's how they sell the printers for cheap in the first place by overcharging for ink. It's not surrprising that Epson are not responding and hoping this company just go away.
On the Brother printers, there's a reset pattern you can use to get it to ignore its counter, and keep using them. There used to be a method for the Canon and HP as well, but I haven't used a Canon in a long time, and HP long ago stopped using the method I knew.

Old post but:

I found elsewhere how to find how many pages you've printed, how many pages are left on the drum (before replacement is required), etc. This is for a laser toner (I don't know if it would work for ink though):

Put the printer in the Service Mode and print the maintenance information page.

  1. Begin with the power switch in the off position and with the front cover open.
  2. Press and hold the "Go" button and then turn the power switch to the on position. All LEDs should light.
  3. When the Status LED turns off after a couple of seconds, release the "Go" button. All LEDs should turn off.
  4. Press the "Go" button twice. About a second later, the Toner, Drum, and Paper LEDs should then light.
  5. Press the "Go" button once more and then close the front cover. A list of maintenance information (including page count and also remaining life of drum and toner cartridge) should be printed.

This was for a printer that was diff from mine (both were brother) so it should work for others as well. It also showed I had 20% left when the low toner light came on (and stayed on for quite a while).

ive used ciss systems (continuous ink supply system) for years with my epsons, changed to the in cartridge type in last year, works superb costs nothing to print and print. ink runs low just fill them up again, Epson even tried selling there own version of it obviously stupidly overpriced tho.

Solved our printer issue's by just going the library lol, although would not mind a BW toner printer as we don't use them all that often and ink would else just dry up by time the need arrived again.

Just about every printer (or AiO) lets you print or see (by logging into IP address) a status page to see how many pages you have printed. As for pages left, those are only estimates.

This is one of the biggest issue's I have for the last few years. Mainly the fact that most now will NOT truly Black only print !
Best modern printer we ever had is the HP C7280. Excellent scanner and truly prints in Black only.
Has 4 color carriages then the black so photos were very good, and refill's priced good at Wal-Mart
Bad part is the issue of the Caps that give out after few years.

So now it's the fuck you game to the consumer it must use color ink yada yada yada. Bullshit !
They had to stop making a good product that is replaced by this bull crap gotta use bla bla bla can only do this or that
Now day's standard ink and XL are the SAME cartridges but the XL has the ink that the standard should have B.S.
Before by damn the XL was much bigger and you knew you were getting more, today, load up all new ink print 1 B&W page well shit some color is already LOW !!!

Now it seem's Kodak is trying to go back to giving consumer's a better ink Quota, but at the high price of the printer cost!

What the hell, years ago it was like that but the competition for market share help keep price's in check, till the "ink" war started then they give you the printer and cost your ass in ink,
but NO that's not it, make the damn thing use ALL the ink's so they can cash in on the whole kit'nkabotal.

The only drawback to that is, believe it or not, a good "Rich Black" contains somewhere between 2% and 10% of the other three colors as well, and only about 90% black. Still, I get the annoyance...

Yeah it seems the smaller ones work better but the smaller ones like the one I have only have a sponge inside of them. I just drilled a hole on top of it and filled them up my self (at least the black color) It worked for a couple of years but since I hardly use it anymore it has clogged up.

yeah i do the same, i fill it by myself i buy new cartridge when the old cartridge cannot be used anymore

That is his argument though, he wants a printer that doesn't use the other colors to print black. Because it wastes the other colors if you are just printing out a document.

That is why you get a monochrome laser for printing documents and anything you don't need color. They are cheap, and the cost per print is super low.

That is why you get a monochrome laser for printing documents and anything you don't need color. They are cheap, and the cost per print is super low.

I've had my monochrome black laser printer for over 5 years now, and its still on the original low capacity 'starter' cartridge.
If i ever got a color, bet your ass i'd use this for any black only prints.

I have a monochrome Samsung fax scan print and a HP 6540 combined inkjet and it worked fine for me. Ink was and still is a little expensive (35€ a cartridge), but it always used almost all of the ink, and it was lasting 400 - 600 pages color and bw.

That's what I picked up. $30 monochrome laser, has wifi a half decent interface and fast print speed. I don't think I have had to print something in color in years so all of this ink left crap really doesn't matter.
