eSATA HDD enclosure (muliple disks) - Does it exist?

Hey Everyone,

I'm going to be doing an upgrade soon and will have five 640GB disks hanging around. I'd like to use this for off site backup.

I'd like an external enclosure that will accommodate 5 drives and connect via a single e-sata port (I'm assuming external power adapter would be required).

RAID isn't necessary. Just the ability to connect multiple drives via a single eSATA. Is this possible? Is there an enclosure that would do this?

You might wanna look into a Qnap or Lacie NAS

Well, I'd have the extra drives because I'd be upgrading my server (which is a pretty good NAS). Also, the speed difference between 1G ethernet and 3G eSATA is pretty significant.

I don't think a NAS is the direction I'd like to go here. I've done a bit more research and I've found something like this:

Looks like a pretty ideal solution, but a bit more expensive than I'm looking.

Does anyone have experience with items like this?

You said you are going to be using this as an off-site backup. How do you plan on doing this? Are you going to bring the enclosure on-site, do a backup, then take it off-site again? Or are you going to just do the off-site backup over the internet?

Every couple months back up the important stuff (photos, tax, etc) and keep it at my parent's place (driving it back and forth when we get together).

Once the initial backup is in place, I know it's possible to set up incremental backups over the internet, I just haven't decided to do that or spend the time setting it up.

We use this enclosure at the photo studio for drives, we've go two of them and I can tell you they are like the Lian-li of external drive enclosures. Expensive but very well built, very functional and easy to use. One thing you gotta do if your sensitive to noise is replace the 80mm cooling fan - it's very easy to do via a thumbscrew holding the fan bracket on at the back.
