I still use physical SIMs in phones but have been wondering lately whether its worth looking into swapping the SIM for an eSim.

Pros and cons?

I also hear you can assign multiple eSIMS to phones... which has got me interested.

Benchmark Scores (My Windows daily driver is a Beelink Mini S12. I'm not interested in benchmarking.)
I have a phone with both physical SIM slot and eSIM (iPhone 12 mini).

My regular domestic cellular service uses the nano SIM slot.

For international travel, I purchase short term cellular data plans with my eSIM using Truphone (there are other companies like Ubigi). This is more convenient than hunting down and fumbling with a SIM card in a foreign land. I can typically activate the cellular data plan in about three minutes -- often while I wait at the baggage carrousel.

Multiple services can be assigned to the same eSIM. You just choose which service you want active with the eSIM. At least for travelers, this can be a boon.

If you only use one carrier and you don't travel internationally, I don't see how an eSIM would be of any benefit.

No real benefit to switch. eSIMS are clearly easier if you're using multiple carriers for whatever reason, but if you're single carrier and already have a SIM there's no reason to change it.

thanks guys...

Actually it does make sense having a spare eSIM (especially for travels) and keeping the physical SIM as is.

Also thanks for sharing more affordable eSIM plans.. i would have settled with my current provider and checking their Sim-only prices it fair to suggest they're bloody expensive.

eSIM looks like when you did CDMA phones but at some points it's not flexible, like you need to register the new phone with the new number again, especially in here migrating sometimes brings you more headache

Exactly what i do. This is a huge revolution for international travelers. You don’t have to try to find some shop willing to sell you something, that’sway overpriced, with difficult communication, give passport data to random 3rd persons, etc

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
One downside to eSIM that I've had to deal with for staff at work:
Good luck moving eSIM between different phones - this is why I'll never use it.
If you break your phone with an eSIM while travelling, you are stuffed. It's fine if your eSIM is from the country you are travelling in, you can just get another eSIM for another phone, no problem.

Most eSIMs are delivered via doemestic carrier network and APN. If you are roaming in foreign lands and need to get your demostic eSIM delivered to a new phone whilst away from your domestic carrier, that ranges from "impossible" to "uncertain" depending on where you are in the world at the time and what level of partnership your domestic carrier has with the network they are partnered with for roaming.

IME eSIMs are ideal for temporary SIMs used while roaming, but the system isn't standardised enough globally to make it a good alternative to a physical SIM for your domestic carrier yet, so I won't use an eSIM for the phone's primary number that all your accounts and services are tied to for messaging/2FA etc.

the best benefit of eSIM is thieft can not use SIM swapping method to take control of your accounts in your lost phone.
with eSIM: you can lost phone but every authentication using that eSIM is safe.
yes, you can call mobile network provider to lock your nano-normal-SIM but until that, thief can swap that SIM to a new phone and take control of accounts use that normal SIM.

it depends on seevice provider. In my local, changing eSIM is very easy, different eSIM-number but SAME phone number.
and Goolge is going to make that easier with android 14.

Little late, but y're damn rigth. Bricking a phone while you're outside your country and you need to call your carrier and wait for a new activation could be a little frigtening.
After reading your comment, i think i will go with physical SIM

I pulled my SIM out for no good reason other my phone was promoting it to me. So far so good.. I do have it tucked away in a safe place if I need it :)

I have that case where you can throw your phone around and its fine.. so hoping for the best :D

I’m in Korea… most people are moving to eSIM I don’t even think about buying sim at the country I’m going to… I just activate roaming with my current provider…. $4 a day for blazing fast LTE …. Though certain countries is better to research ahead if the service is better to buy locally

My s23 supports 2 physical simcards, so using both private and work simcard in it, and disable work sim when i get off work.

Why don't i use esim ? At least where i live it's more of a bother to get, and i find physical sims more reliable.

For now I avoid eSIM. I've never ever borked my phone in over 20 years(still have my Nokia 3310 and N75 that are fully functional except batteries), but just in case it ever happens - all I need is to go and get a spare/new phone, put my SIM card in it, enter my Google account and go on with my life. 20-30minutes of downtime(including full file sync).
With eSIM, I need to contact my cell provider, which in my case is easier to do physically by going to their nearest store ('cause you need to hang on the line for over an hour just to get to a human being, and it's still not a guarantee that your problems will get resolved). If it happens in the evening, you might miss business hours at the store and wait overnight. Overseas travel for now is not an option for me, but imagine your phone dying and there's no one in a 1000km radius you can reach to re-activate your eSIM on another device. Downtime - probably a whole working day in the best case scenario. Even though it's all hypothetical for me - it's still a scary possibility that's not looking good for eSIM.

Some guys are just "whatever phone is decently fast fits me" so neither of my current mobile devices supports eSIM. That's why I stick to the time tested standard solution. And in case you're short on toothpicks...

I also don't remember when I was more than 30 miles away from home last time so whatever. Maybe in a couple decades eSIM becomes flawless enough (or just the only option, who knows) but now, standard SIM is my way to go.

eSIM will probably replace physical SIMs at some point - but that won't happen until they reach feature parity.

At the moment they're different and that's not a bad thing or a good thing - just a thing; You can manage 99% of the time with either option and as long as you know the limitations of each one you're not going to get caught short.

I still use the nano sim from my S7 now in my S23, didn't get a new sim from my provider.

It still works.

Just one little thing to add, not all countries issue eSIMs, so check before you travel unless you use one of those international roaming type services via eSIM.

Dual physical sim phones still exist too, which I find better.

Second slot can typically also be used for a Micro SD card as well.

S10+ Ceramic my phone has this, useful.

Dual physical sim phones still exist too, which I find better.

Second slot can typically also be used for a Micro SD card as well.

S10+ Ceramic my phone has this, useful.

Samsung has (as one of the few) continued supporting dual physical sims, in addition to esim.

I know samsung get alot of sales to business customers alone for that reason.

True, however there isn't any support for MicroSD on the S series since S21.

Doesn't matter to me - or most other people i should think.

I got the 128gb s23 since storage hardly matters to me... and using 40% of it.

Doesn't matter to me neither, I got 256 GB on S23+, that'll be more than enough. Larger internal storage isn't as expensive as it used to be (excluding Iphone).

Back on topic: Still on physical SIM, however I believe eSIM will become the standard in a few years. For example Iphone 14 and onwards support eSIM only in the US, while there's still an option for additional physical card internationally. Benefits and faults of eSIM have been said here already.
