The 790i boards are just insane price wise. I wish nVidia would just let us use SLI on any chipset, or at least Intel chipsets. But then I guess they wouldn't be able to charge us and arm and a leg for their own motherboards.

i want to get a 780i with a q9450 for an upgrade?

the striker boards are really nice but way overpriced i'll probably stick with eVGA again.

anyone have any suggestion/objections?

i was also considering and x48 based system but i dont like the lack of SLi eventhough ive never used it on my 680i

If you dont want Tri SLi, you know my views.....MSI 750i Platinum or secondly their 780i Diamond, the Striker boards are aparently rife with problems and the MSI boards seem to overclock best, in fact in one review I posted, the MSI PLatinum overclocked a Q6600 higher than the Asus Maximus X38 chipset.

um no a maximus formula (correction maybe when the first M/F was out but not now). Now will do FSB 570 a 780I maybe 460 to 470. 790I boards are very good but check extreme systems forum there is a MSI 780I thread full of bugs. I know I was gonna buy one. The 750i is a good board.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but ive been looking for an answer i cant seam to find anywhere (perhaps its just that obvious and my 27 hour lack of sleep is just getting to me).

Anyway, does anyone know if the EVGA NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI DDR3 supports xeon versions of core 2 quad (yorkfield) processors?

I have the option to purchase either the standard or the xeon versions for the same price and understand xeon chips are manufactured to a higher quality (and are better for overclocking). Will a xeon work?

They do. The only SLi chipset AFAIK that does not support Yorkfield is the 680i. And even then, some do. EVGA doesnt on the 680i front, but does for 7x0i.
