And yes, these are hulking monsters that are sore to my eye. I have always been a fan of the blower fans and that is it. But I think those are going to go the way of the ghost too, right?

Blowers are not gonna go away, they are still the most used (OEM) solution and Turing won't change that. Guess you've found your reason to skip Turing - there's one to be found for every single person it seems

For their added noise and reduced cooling capacity (per mm2 of heatsink area), blowers ARE reliable because they are less impacted by case temp.

My guess is they discovered a design fault in the original shrouds where the amount of open area decreased airflow over the surface area where it was needed, so they made cheap inserts to try and fix it...meanwhile, they came up with the idea of making a dollar off their stuff up by selling it as a "trim kit" after the initial "free" release.

A lot of the reasons I'm seeing is that as of yet we don't have benchmarks showing performance. For those us who have the current gen cards, and are satisfied with the performance of such, we would need benchmarks showing compelling reason to upgrade. For those with GTX 9xx series of cards or earlier, the upgrade to the 10xx series or the new 20xx will likely be easier.
