It's been mentioned here and elsewhere that the 660Ti is competing with 7950. I thought the 670 was to compete with the 7950 originally but ended up competing with the 7970? I'm confused a bit.

All you have to do is check the prices. They will tell you which is competing with which. It's different than last generation because Nvidia has only one chip that seems to cover everything mid and high end.

The 670 even competes with the 680 in a sense. There is less than 5% performance difference.
