20 series is early adopter tax for an immature tech. 2080 isn't powerful enough for RTRT, only fake RT, and even then you'll be getting a massive hit in FPS even at relatively mild resolutions. I just don't think it's worth it especially when very few actual games are supporting it... lolI recommend the 2080. I had a 1080 and now have a 2080. It was worth it. And for the future of RTRT gaming is going to be solid fun to have.
Your opinion, and you're welcome to it.20 series is early adopter tax for an immature tech. 2080 isn't powerful enough for RTRT, only fake RT
That's not what a metric ton of video's on YouTube are showing. I see video's by respected channel's showing very playable framerates with DXR in BF5 and the effect is very cool. For example Jay showed some aspects to gaming where BF5's RT FX were very useful in game. Hell yes I'd turn that on.and even then you'll be getting a massive hit in FPS even at relatively mild resolutions. A used 1080ti for a good price might be a very compelling option, but only for a good price which in my opinion would be 450£ or around 500$to rtx 2080 - not worth upgrade. if you will sell your gtx 1080 used, then you will have to add +400$ to that money for only 30% performance increase.... it is not worth hassle and cost by any means in my books. now that we know RayTracing is and will not usable even on rtx 2080 ti - you can drop all hopes or "futureproofing" (aka nivia marketing) about that and make decision only based on performance and performance/price.
in case if one thinks: "well gtx 1080 vs rtx 2080 = +30% and that sounds good and clear upgrade to me" - I have question - why you did not upgrade earlier? why now? and why not upgrade to used gtx 1080 ti for (your used sold gtx 1080 + 150$) ?
Maybe, but it's still playable. Looking at the past, Intel's MMX wasn't even utilized until a full year after release and was only optimized after a further year. RTX is no different. It's going to take some time to learn and optimize for it. However, devs are learning much faster these days and the first game entry that takes advantage of RTX is showing what it can do to great effect. I'm excited to see the first real demo's and benchmarking suites as well as games.Gamersnexus has analyzed how rt is implemented in bfV and its far from great.
This is true. If the OP is willing to buy used, a 1080ti is a great value! However, new, the 2080 is the better bet.A used 1080ti for a good price might be a very compelling option, but only for a good price which in my opinion would be 450£ or around 500$

What are you talking about? I got my 2080 for $760 shipped, and after selling my 1080 ended up spending $400 out of pocket. Heck it's even dropped in price, when it's in stock.so why paying way over msrp now when you can wait a couple of years for more rt games and hopefully cheaper and faster cards

However, what these price-panicked pundits don't understand is that there's value in being an early adopter. And there's a cost to either delaying your purchase or getting an older-generation product so you can save money.

true - and by the time it will be actually usable I will gladly buy RTX 40xx and laugh about those who dropped 1200$ for obsolete (by that time) rtx 2080 tiRTX is no different. It's going to take some time to learn and optimize for it
that is only speculation form you. I do not think any dev has time (aka money) to waste for 1.0% of the shrinking market. wake me up when RayTracing is usable option in 200$ GPU segment - then we can talk about devis investing tiem (aka money) in it. would you finance (give devs time) to chase 1.0% market? or ar you expecting that soon 10% of PC gaming will be above 800$ gpus? However, devs are learning much faster these days and the first game entry that takes advantage of RTX is showing what it can do to great effect
How do you not see the value? To each their own..$760 for a card that is only 30% faster than a two and half yr old $550 card where do you see the value in that?
First, I have the 2080, not the ti. Second, in the mean time I have a card that kicks the everliving crap out of my previous card and unlike the 1080ti, can do RTRT.true - and by the time it will be actually usable I will gladly buy RTX 40xx and laugh about those who dropped 1200$ for obsolete (by that time) rtx 2080 ti
I expect adoption rates to increase as time goes on and as NVidia discontinues the 1000 series GPU's.would you finance (give devs time) to chase 1.0% market? or ar you expecting that soon 10% of PC gaming will be above 800$ gpus?
Only NVidia branded 2080's were above $900. AIB cards were less from the start. My card was at $790ish on release and came down.rtx 2080 does come down in price as we speak (was 950$ "sold out" and now is 750-ish$)

Here's something that may help you: https://www.hardocp.com/article/2018/10/22/rtx_2070_vs_2080_gtx_1080_ti_1070/Playing mainly at 3440x1440, would this be a nice upgrade? Cost is the same as GTX1080ti. The RTX2080ti is out of range.

Well then, go for it. The 2080 is ridiculously expensive, but if you're willing to put up with that, it's significantly faster.Main reason I would change is I'm able to sell my GTX1080 for a nice price (400 Euro) and since gaming on a 3440x1440 ultrawide with 120fps, I often see the GTX1080 struggling to go to 100fps average in some titles at that resolution. So hoping the 2080 would give me that.
