External Hdd magnetic force bad?

I just brought another 1Tb external Seagate as they were cheap and it matches my existing one. I went to stack them on top of each other when i noticed a fair amount of magnetic force between them. I know Hdd's have magnets in them, but what i want to know is, Is it possible that they could erase each other? :confused:

Doubtful. You need a powerful electromagnet to penetrate the case of the HDD and erase the platters. I'm not sure even rare-earth magnets are strong enough to do it. The only magnets in a hard drive are used to move the head, read/write, and spin the platters. They are fairly weak.

fords right, but what weirds me out is that you said they're magnetic?

are you sure you werent getting confused by the platter spinning around when you were holding it in your hand, making it move funny?

what them magnets are as tough as hell, but they sort of cancel each other out inside the drive (have you tried prying them appart ?)

and as for stacking them on top of each ye got to say i've had no problems with mine been close together as of yet but in use i'd say give e'm plenty of space for cooling

Have you ever pulled them apart, they are far from weak. They are stong enough to smash my finger when I accidentally let two of them smack together with my finger stuck in the middle. Turned the finger nail black...

But, yes you are correct in that there is no real risk of them erasing near by hard drives, because the metal case of the drive prevents most of the magnetic force from penetrating to the platters.

Just unplugged one and moved it around the other, You're correct, it is the gyroscopic force that was the culprit. :laugh:
