I've lapped the CPU and GPU on my old P3... just wanted to see how far I could take it. An idea came to me that maybe I could lapp my DIMM's as well... I mean, the plastic cover can't be a good heat conductor? And maybe it has a copper base like my CPU - WRONG!!! Take a look at the pic below. I sanded till I got to this point. There was nothing before it, only black plastic.

Has anyone ever attempted this before? Is there a chance that this may work? I tried the mem but it couldn't pass the mem boot test (just wanted to see if it would boot into the BIOS - it did)... The mem had errors before and that's why I tried it on this chip.

ANYTHING regarding this will help - If it works, I intend to lapp my VX RAM and water cool it to see what I can get out of it.

Always wondered what the inside of an IC looked like.

Wow, that looks like one ALMOST screwed up DIMM! Those wires are very thin so if you sand a thousandth of an inch further it will be gone... hehe. I guess it'll work. Just make sure you use non-conductive material between that and the waterblock. Otherwise you might damage more than just your RAM. I personally wouldn't do it though. RAM doesn't get that hot when watercooled. The lapping isn't going to make that much of a difference. But it's your RAM so if you want, go for it... ;)

zAAm,

I'm not doubting your knowledge, but how do you know that this will not damage my VX RAM? I would like to have a little more feedback before I attempt to possibly break it.

Well, if you don't sand away any of those wires and you're not sanding away any components and just the plastic, it would work. As I've said, you have to use non-conductive material then since you can't short the wires. If you want an expert opinion (hehe, more into electronics than even me) PM Dippyskoodlez. I'm sure he'll be able to give a second opinion. ;)

Um those leads go up to the microcircuits of the actual print of the ram. I doubt it will still work.

True, but as long as they're still there it should work. He said there was nothing before these leads, only plastic. So I don't think he sanded through memory capacitors. I wouldn't do it purely because I'd be afraid to sand down the leads as well and also because I don't have ANY reason to do it. As I've said it wouldn't make much if any difference in cooling performance if you ask me...
