When I'm applying thermal paste I wrap a clean sandwich bag tightly around my finger, then smear it evenly over the surface. Seems to work pretty well; you get control that way, and no skin oils.

I use the "bondo" approach. Take an old credit card, or other piece of flat plastic and spread it with that.

i just put a dot on the gpu, and mounted heatsink, letting heatsink spread out thermal paste. still running damn hot.

I have an X1800XT 512mb and it idles at 46C. If u are idling around 60-70C, that means that A.) Put to much thermal paste on. B.) You are overclocking your card to much. If u want to cool down your card, get a Zalman VF900cu with some AS5. My temps are idle: 44C-47C avg Load: ~62C And if your overclocking your X1800XT over 700/1600 u better have decent cooling or your going to fry your card. Trust me.. I have. And the dot application is MOSTLY used for cpu's b/c the cpu is in the middle of the die. Spread out a rice size of AS5 until it is completely even. But make sure that u clean the GPU and the heatsink using 99% alcohol. Then make sure that u put the heatsink on tight but not to tight or you will crack your gpu.

Turn your machine off, go to the store and get some AS5:)

The X1900XT only has 256mb of ram on it. The X1800XT 512mb is comparable to the X1900XT 256mb.

i don't think the performance translates exactly in the analogy of
16 pixelshader processors : 256mb ram :: 48 pixelshader processors :512mb ram

i'm going to find the review that came out a while ago with both of these cards tho
strong card, but it just is not 1900series power at stock

Well fear uses textures extensively so in fear the X1800XT with 512mb gets around the same fps as the X1900XT 256mb. Thats how i see it. Even though the X19x0 series does have the extra pixelshaders

i'm not sure which one of the following applies, but i think these will cover it:

the gto has tighter ram timings, therefore the two memory timings can't be directly compared

also, my core is higher than the gtx in that bench

my cpu is @ 2.7ghz and my ram is at 490mhz @ 2.5-3-3-8 (idk reference for the bench, but it's pretty quick)

i think that easily accounts for the gains i have, showing it's not just the gpu that makes a computer

and you can say, "i don't see how you're getting those scores mustang," instead of "this dude"
i'm here too, lol

lol i got the gpu vcore @ 1.6 memory 1.90 and i/o @ 1.90 , i used to beable to run 750/1700 stable 24/7, now my cards crashing @ 700/1600 stock unless i turn fanspeed to 70% or higher, i just applied new thermal paste a minute ago also wtf lol.
No wonder your card runs hot, i thought ur only meant to go above 1.5v if u have water cooling, also when volting or clocking this high u should set fan to 100%.
Dont forget when u apply new thermal paste u have to let it break in (settle), u cant just apply it and expect record oc's.

My X1800gto 16pipes @ stock idles @39° - fan @ 41%
@ 725/801 1.475v core/2.376v mem fan @ 100% during hl2 LC stress test 1280*1024 full settings temps have never gone above 55°
During 3d06 the max temp i've seen is 64°

Also what app are u using to clock the card coz atitool tops the core voltage off at 1.575v?

Don't wipe it, it expans when it gets hot.

some cheap silicon paste, but why?

Your supposed to wipe it. If you have Arctic Silver 5 on an IHS (like Pentium 4/D, Core 2 Duo, and AMD), you're supposed to just have a small dot in the middle. But if you apply it to a bare die like NorthBridge, or GPU Core, then you have to spread it.

It even says so here:
W/ IHS:

The X1900XT only has 256mb of ram on it. The X1800XT 512mb is comparable to the X1900XT 256mb.

No its not, the 512MB ram versus 256 only improves performance by 1-3FPS in games, seen the results of 2 1800XT's tested on same system one with the 256 one with the 512, there was only actually any difference once the screen resolutions were raised above 1280x1024, both cards on same system all tested on 5 games....Oblivion, Fear, COD, Half life lost coast and BF2.

I have extracts of the review posted in another thread so I will try and find the link if your interested.
