F4-2400C15D-16GFX Working on Crosshair VI???

hello all,

So I bought an ASUS Crosshair VI board. This RAM worked fine before my old board (X370 Taichi) before it got bricked in a BIOS update gone wrong. CPU worked as well. Only thing changed was motherboard which was bought new. The above RAM kit is not on the ASUS QVL list for my board with the Ryzen 1700 processor. However on GSKILL's website it says it works?

Reason for asking is that the board won't post and is giving Q-code "8". This is using the factory AMD cooler and back plate. Could it be because the RAM is not on the QVL? Just wondering if this is yet another board that is not working, or if it's possible it's RAM incompatibility.

I doubt its the ram. Maybe try just one stick and try different slots.

Code 8 is CPU related. Check that you have the 8 pin CPU power plugged in. Make sure the cooler is putting even pressure on the CPU and socket. Might also check for bent pins.

What are you seeing with the onboard LED's?

Memory in slots A2 and B2? Tried 1 stick in slot A2?

That's FlareX memory so it should work

If hes getting code 8 then its not even trying to post and the q-leds wouldnt be coming on.

I wonder if the failed bios update on the old board caused the microcode of the processor to get corrupted.

Yeah no onboard LED's just the CPU ready green light. I have to try and assemble it outside, it's about the only thing I haven't tried.

What does q code 8 specify in your manual? Is there any way of bboting the board up without ram and doing a bios flash?

So I figured out what it was. You can see the piece that broke off where it should be. Before it broke off I would power the board and it would say "8" on the Q-Code LED. While showing "8" I would gently push down on that piece (before it broke off) and the board would start to cycle through the POST codes and boot, I let it go, screen goes black, LED goes back to "8". Tried it a few times and confirmed it was that. I then noticed that that piece was slightly leaning to one side. I swear I just as much as looked at it and it finished breaking off. I don't recall hitting that part of the board, or anything. ...and if I did, I didn't notice. The box doesn't have any shipping damage. Regardless this is some shitty luck. Can this be fixed somehow? Soldering it back on maybe?

The board should still be under warranty, RMA it. Dont bother trying to fix it.

Would they even RMA it? I know most places will not if there is physical damage, or so I've been told.

I'll give it a shot, got nothing to lose at this point. For all I know I'm being harsh on my self and it came with that piece not soldered on right or something. Thanks to all that tried to help out. Unfortunately it was not anything that could be fixed. :toast :toast:

No need to be harsh on yourself, defective hardware issues pop up all the time on new out of the box hardware. Besides, RMA'ing an item can be the adventure of a lifetime!

HAHA. Tell me about it. My initial Ryzen build was with a X370 Taichi board. RAM slot died on it, I RMA'ed it through Newegg. The replacement board got bricked during a BIOS flash, which I had done successfully prior to the failed attempt with the first board, before the RAM slot failed and I replaced it. So I said screw it, I've always bought ASUS boards. So I figured I'll either build another cruncher with the replacement Taichi when I get it, or sell it. I got this one, and now this. Three boards, none work.... :banghead:

Few years ago when i built my rig, i got a sound bnib, well it was doa, had to rma to creative labs because it was outside the return policytime. Rmad it, got a bnib sound card

Ah damn, that's annoying! If they won't accept an RMA anybody with good soldering skills could sort that for you, a bit of flux, dab of solder, clean it up with some Iso and you wouldn't be able to tell it had ever come off.

I think you'd have to use some solder wick and remove one of those caps to get access to the other side of that inductor though. Not too difficult.

I would be very specific when requesting the DOA/RMA and inform them that a component fell off of the motherboard and that is the reason for the request. Of course, that's based on what I can see on my phone

Well I bought it on Amazon, so they have an option for "product damaged, shipping box okay". So I chose that. Let's see how it goes. If it doesn't work I'll try to fix it, it's dead now anyways so I would have nothing to lose. Keep you'll posted!

For repairing, isn't there conductive glue you could use? That should work as well as solder as long as the board doesn't get too hot.

Well here's a little update. Amazon got back to me, and replied saying they are out of stock on that board. However, they asked that if I wanted they can ship me the same board, but the WIFI version of the board at no additional cost, with one day shipping since I am an Amazon Prime member. So I said yes and the board should be here tomorrow by 8pm. They already provided me with the label so that I can ship the dead board back. That's pretty awesome of them. So I have the Taichi heading back to Newegg, and this one back to Amazon. I might just build another Ryzen cruncher with that spare Taichi board I'm going to have. :rockout:

So I got the replacement CH VI today. Put it together, code 8 again! I was on my way to get some gas to light it on fire when I decided to turn back and loosen up the water block a bit. BAM, it booted. Went into BIOS, checked over everything, restarted, code 8 again! So I decided to put the factory AMD cooler back and it's working flawlessly. I'll have to contact EK about the new back plate rubber gasket since I know their old ones have an issue with this board. Least of my worries now though, just glad it's working! :rockout:

Thank you all that helped and pitched in to help me out while I sorted this out. Now let's just hope it keeps working! Also already came with the latest BIOS installed, don't gotta do that for now as updating the BIOS has not been kind to me lately. :banghead:
