Wish I could afford a HTC Vive for testing this out but not with the price tag have a lot more to spend my money on.

I stopped playing Fallout 4 when I heard about the VR version coming. I was only around 25% complete. It was hard to stop, because I was really enjoying it. I just hope my GTX 970 can handle it.. lol I'm trying my best to hold out for the next round of cards, but this may be my tipping point. I can't wait to actually look on my arm at my Pip-Boy.

I bought Fallout4 and Season pass with full price. So I am sitting fence on this as well. Let's see how good it is before jumping in. There will always be another Steam sale down the road.

You will still have to buy the Fallout 4 VR version as well, buddy. It sucks, but I think it will be worth it. I picked it up for $50 bucks after a 15% discount on GreenManGaming.com.

The system specs for the Oculus Rift CV1 have come down a lot, but yea you will want to upgrade. I want to as well. I'm still using an i7 2600k @ 4.0Ghz, 16gb ram, and a GTX 970. I believe I'm going to build a new Ryzen system next year. Plus, I'm really trying to hold out for the next round of Nvidia cards.

I am really enjoying Doom VFR and hope that Fallout 4 VR is even better.

I bought it with the expectation that Bethesda just wasn't going to officially support Rift, but with the shenanigans going on with Doom VFR, I'm now in doubt. I too ordered through GMG, so I'm not sure I'll be able to refund my copy. :(

EDIT: Looks like Doom VFR is working now on Rift sets after installing a new Steam VR Beta. Apparently this was due to a "bug" on Bethesda's part.

I wouldn't worry. Doom wasn't working with Oculus Rift due to a bug, not because they lock them out. See below :toast:

Via the Steam Community:

SteamVR Dashboard:
  • Enabled trackpad scrolling in the Steam dashboard in the new input system.
  • Enabled the scroll wheel model on Vive controllers for overlays that request it.
  • Fixed issue with the laser pointer itself lagging behind the controller it is attached to.
  • Changed Windows Mixed Reality and Vive controllers back to using a partial trigger pull for “click” instead of requiring the user to pull the trigger all the way.
Oculus:
  • Fixed crash with Vulkan applications on Oculus Rift on AMD GPU

I played a little bit. Works with rift, but the menu controls are looking for the directional pad, and not the stick of the Rift Touch. So when you're moving around the menu you move the stick and the cursor returns to your center position. Made trying to get through the tutorial very interesting.

Also hit a bug where when you get to the vault door it wouldn't trigger the explosion and let me down into the vault. I'll go back to it a little later. Hopefully they release an update to fix the control wonkiness.

@Mindweaver any reviews from you yet?
I am really surprised at how well my 970 handles it. It's a bit blurry, but I've found a fix for it. I just haven't applied it yet. It's a pretty simple fix by just turning off taa. It's crazy at the amount of stuff people have fixed so far. Someone has even enabled mod support which is awesome. There is a texture mod that really improves performance with lower Ram like my 970. I played right at 2 hours last night. Well it took me 30 minutes to get started.. lol Lately it's been taking me 10 minutes to get SteamVR loaded, because I'm using the Revive beta build and I have to manually update it. I'll probably go back to the regular release build tonight which auto updates. Then the next issue was not being able to put your character name in when prompted. I had to opted out of the SteamVR beta build to get past that part as well.

The Game
So now, about the game itself. I was amazed at the scale in game. The only issue I had was my character was shorter than I actually am, and it felt like my feet where below the ground. My wife in the game was like 6'3" and I was 5'7". I'm actually 6'4" in rl. That's not a big deal, but it was weird looking up to everyone.. lol Now, the graphics look really good in side, but they are a bit blurry outside. I believe I can fix this by turning off taa. I'll update once I do. Even though it's blurry outside it still looks amazing. Time seemed slower in game as well, because it only started getting dark right when I started to quite which was around 2 hours, but dusk looked really good. It started to rain right at dusk as well, and that looked amazing which pushed me to play for another 10 minutes.

Building and gathering resources
I think they really nailed gathering resources, and building stuff. I built 3x generators 1x the smallest one and 2x the next biggest one which is huge! Connecting the power lines to stuff is really satisfying and looks awesome. I could have stayed up another 2 hours and just built stuff.. lol I built 3x guard posts. 2x smaller guard posts and 1x taller guard post. Walking up to the top of the taller guard post was nice. In the pancake edition it doesn't feel like it's that tall, but it is in VR.. lol You can really see the advantage of being that high look out for bad guys.. lol I can't get over how natural it feels to look around and place stuff to build.

Combat
The melee; The fact that all you have to do is swing your arms, and hit things is awesome. I've only ran into roaches so far, but wow! They are fast.. lol and jump right at your face.. hehe but one good wack and they are done. I only found a pistol which really feels good in game. I haven't used vats for combat yet, because aiming the pistol, and shooting things is so satisfying. It's funny, because I didn't even figure out Vats until I was quiting.. lol It's really cool how it slows down time. It's crazy at all the small little touches like leaves blowing around that I really never noticed in the pancake game. The world really feels alive. I really want to upgrade my GTX 970 now, but the fact it runs so well with it, is awesome.

Movement
Let's not forget the movement methods. The teleport option works well, but it takes no time for you to run out of breath. Now, free locomotion is fast and works really well. I used it for over an hour and it's really touchy. I need to adjust the speed because it's really fast, but it's nice when you have to go far. They just need to re-balance teleporting to where you're not running out of breath so fast.

Over all
Well that's it for now. I can say if you are on the fence, and haven't bought it yet then DO IT! I can't wait to get home to get back into the the wasteland!

My Score: 8/10 - But I'm sure this will change once I tweak it.

I've just spent a couple of hours on it and I'm really enjoying it, the controls are pretty intuitive, it doesn't look too bad (considering low res of the vive). Playing in VR certainly adds immersiveness, rad roaches flying at you will make you jummp, encountering codsworth and dogmeat for the first time is pretty cool, all the little details are just way more noticable now. Watching the nuke and descending into the vault as if it was actually happening is so nuts, this game really does seem to suit VR!

Combat is cool, beating radroaches with a baton is fun, I've so far only shot some bloatflys and molerats with the 10mm pistol, that went well. It's a lot more involving aiming with the sights of weapons instead of moving a crosshair with a mouse. I can't wait to fight some proper enemies :D

I need to confirm this in a heavily built up area, but it appears that the game is better multithreaded than the original, all threads were loaded 20-30% while playing so far, which is really cool. I assumed the game would still be heavily single thread dependent so was playing with 1800x at 4.125ghz.. seems like running it that hard is pointless. Happy days!

Fallout 4 VR update said:
Fallout 4 VR | Steam Beta Update 1.0.28.0
December 12 - JessBethesda
We’ve identified a fix for those of you experiencing blurriness/low resolution in Fallout 4 VR. There is a beta update now available on Steam.

Please see below for the list of patch notes that reflect what’s addressed in this beta update.

Fixed an issue that would affect the in-game resolution based on desktop resolution
Increased default application supersampling value from 1.0 to 1.4x
-- To change this value up or down to adjust performance or quality, add the following to your Fallout4Custom.ini in My Games/Fallout4VR:
[VRDisplay]
fRenderTargetSizeMultiplier=< your value >
Fixed an issue where players would be unable to use the world rotate functionality while commanding companions
Stability improvements

To opt-in to the Steam beta update please follow the instructions here:

How to access the Steam Beta:

Log into Steam.
Right Click on Fallout 4 VR in your Library.
Select Properties.
Select Betas.
A drop down menu will appear. Select Fallout 4 VR Update 1.0.28.0
Select OK.
Wait for the game to update.
When done, Fallout 4 VR Update 1.0.28.0 should appear in your Library.

If you run into any issues, please let us know by posting in our official support forums [bethesda.net].

Thank you for your feedback.

I haven't tried it yet, but this takes care of the blurriness. This also, raises the SS from 1.0 to 1.4 so if your system can't handle it then change the ini file back to 1.0.

EDIT: Link to update info

EDIT:
Okay so, I opt-in'd for the beta and updated my ini file and set my SS to 1.0, and WOW! Blurriness is gone! It's amazing how much better it looks. I can't believe my GTX 970 handles it so well after making those changes. It's crazy at the detail that I've notice in VR over the pancake version. I've caught myself a few times where I almost forgot I was in a game. lol I'm glade my boundary pops up when I get to close to the edges.. lol

So, I got the Power Armor in Concord. It's cool and it makes you very tall, but the hud at the bottom under your helmet blocks your view from seeing anything blow you.. I had to bend over to grab loot.. I think this could be lower or something. It's not bad after you adjust to bending over to grab loot.. lol I found it really awesome to point the chain gun over and around stuff as well.

I started using vats when multiple targets come out at me. That part works really well and makes you feel like your in the matrix.. lol Turning on Vats then teleporting in close enough to shoot them in the head or them shooting at you and then turn on vats and teleport out of the way of a bullet. If I didn't need to go to bed I would stay up and play it more. It's hard to describe how awesome it is over the pancake version.

FuryX without Async Reprojection is unplayable. I puked the first time during VR.

Seriously f*uck you AMD for the sh*itty VR support. One year after and still no Async Reprojection support for us Fury/X owners.

:(

EDIT: Just refunded the game. Not because the game is bad, it is because this POS GPU performs so bad that i can’t even play it.

I was only able to play for less than an hour last night, but I was able to get out of Vault 111 and noticed the horrible resolution and blurriness issues which made me feel even more sick than I had already felt with the smooth locomotion option. I'm going to try that fix tonight and I'm going to go back to the teleport movement option, too. I'm looking forward to upgrading the weapons especially the sights which are difficult to see on the standard 10mm pistol. Can't wait to get the holographic sights.

Did you try opt'ning into the beta, and changing the ini file's SS back to 1.0? Also, people are reporting mods are working, and one of the texture mods which improves the textures and also lowers the sizes of the textures which will help performance. At the rate which Bethesda, and gamers are making improvements; I wouldn't have refunded it.

Yea, I had to change back to teleport as well.. I didn't get sick but I could tell it was coming on.. lol but after this last update I need to try it again. I still prefer teleporting over smooth locomotion. I think after you make those changes I listed above you should be golden with your 1080ti. Just remember to lower the SS back to 1.0 in the ini file. The issue with that is most users set SS in SteamVR and if the game is applying 1.4 SS and you have SteamVR's SS set to 2.0 with your graphics card, then your actually setting it to 3.4 and that cripples even 1080ti's. Don't forget to come back and let us know what you think after you make the changes. It's going to be a long day, because I can't wait to go back in! :toast:

I actually don’t know where the supersampling setting is so I assume it’s the default setting. I’ve applied the beta patch and I’ve just played for about twenty minutes. It seems to be running great and it looks great, too. I haven’t done much except scrap a bunch of stuff in the first town and upgrade the 10mm pistol. After I get out of a conference call I’m going to head back in. After the beta patch my experience has been better than the non-VR version so far.

Do you have OpenVR-AdvancedSettings installed? If not then you need too. It will let you set SS in SteamVR. It has a lot more settings than just SS as well, like height adjustments. It's nice so if you want to play seated then change your height in the Advanced settings so your not the size of a dwarf.. lol Plus, I'm going to adjust it to my actual height.

You can find the ini file to set SS to 1.0 from 1.4 in your document - Documents/My Games/Fallout4VR/Fallout4Custom.ini. Open it using notepad then scroll to the bottom and add the code below.

Code:
[VRDisplay]
fRenderTargetSizeMultiplier=1.0

Then go into Advanced Settings and change it. You should be able to make it higher than 1.4. Just play around and find out how high you can take it before losing performance.

Another one you can add, but I've not tested yet is turning off taa and turning on fxaa. Just add this below. If it doesn't look good then remove it or just turn off taa by removing the fxaa part ";fxaa on". If you get a chance to test this before I do, can you let us know? Thanks

Code:
[General]
sStartingConsoleCommand=taa off;fxaa on

Having no extra money to buy any decent GPU right now. :(

The update was what caused me to intiate refund. Before the update I was getting constant forced reprojection due to very poor FPS (around 25~30). After the update I was getting 11~15 FPS. The SteamVR frame time bar was basically chunks of red with tiny bit of green(good) frame times.

As of today AMD still haven't implement Async Reprojection on Fury/X, which does not help the case one bit.

Pls enjoy the game for me folks! Hopefully I can get to afford a decent non-AMD GPU next year to play FO4VR

EDIT: I am glad my fellow Fury/X/Nano owners have finally had enough with AMD's bullshit and decided to take some action.

Background: AMD promised Async Reprojection Support at start of 2017. With the latest 17.12.1 driver release it is still not supported on Fury/X/Nano or 390X/390/380/290.

AMD brand them as "Premium VR experience" yet failed to implement even the most basic VR support to a large portion of their user base.

Sorry for thread hijacking. But Fallout4 VR is one of the last straw that bascially render our FuryX unusable in VR. As you have experienced, even GTX970 run Fallout4VR just fine.
