So I've removed a fan from it's housing before just by pulling directly forward on it. A little nervous pressure later and it was off and I was able to paint it white leaving the part surrounding the blades black and saving myself 15 minutes of work with painters tape.

I tried it on a fan that I've had sitting in a box for a year or so and one of the blades snapped clean off. No biggie as it was a $5 fan that's been sitting in a box.

Is there a better way to do this that won't possibly snap a blade off? A flathead screwdriver near the motor and twisting to lift it off or something?

Typically you just remove a sticker and there is a clip around the shaft take that of and the fan will come apart. Be careful taking the clip off and not to loose it.

Some are sealed like Zalman fans for example ( not sure if it all there fans though ).
