How many hours are GFX fans supposed to last? I assume that since modern cards are idle when below 60C, the fans are/should be of lower quality. I have owned an Asus R7 260X Dual CU2 1GB since 2012, and the fans still spin perfectly. When i upgraded in 2016 the card was loaned to a friend, and the fans were permanently maxed in AMD Radeon Wattman. He returned the card, I realised its been 3 years witha guy who never turns off his PC and the fans still spin at 3500RPM willingly. Its impressive that Asus put high quality components in what was a low end card, Ive seen Gigabytes Windforce fans fail constantly around me and on higher end models too. Does anyone know if this was pure luck or do certain manufacturers use higher quality bearings?

Fan off at idle can extend the lifespan pretty drastically

From experience over the years fans tend to fail after 2-5 years of use, it really depends how often they're running and how dusty they get

And of course the moment some genius decides to clean the fan blades by spinning them backwards with compressed air, they tend to be ruined pretty fast

Certain manufacturers use double ball bearing for the fans on their products. If they are well maintained, they can last for a while. From my research some double ball bearing fans can last around 50'000 hours, so that's around 5 years of continuous use.

Fan lifespan largely depends on operating conditions, regardless of fan design.
One of the big factors is operating temperature. E.g. if you get 100K hours MTTF(Mean Time To Failure) for 40C in spec, then at 60C it may get cut in half.
Dust and humidity also add their effects on top of it.
I think over the past 20-something years I've only had 1 fan fail on me personally, and to my surprise it was a Noctua NF-A9x14 (SSO2, which is supposed to be one of the most reliable w/ 150K hours MTTF).
Though, I had lots of failed fans in client GPUs/systems and AFAIK the reason is always dust and excessive heat. Regardless whether it's SSO, Ball-bearing, or maglev, it's gonna be affected by both in a hard way.

BTW, funny fact: GB Windforce fans are mostly made by Everflow and they claim a whooping 180K hours MTTF (which probably requires a wink emoji in the spec as well, since those are the ones with most complaints of rattling and failures).

Why worry so much?
If the fan is installed properly and left alone, it'll either work for a very long time or die because of low quality (unlikely).
You're surrounded by fans. They're in your car, in your oven, your fridge, your router and maybe even in your TV.
And I bet you don't think a lot about their expected lifetime. ;-)

Most problems with fans in PCs stem from running on voltage outside of specification, poor fastening, tuning and meddling. Just don't buy the cheapest stuff.
Certain manufacturers use double ball bearing for the fans on their products. If they are well maintained, they can last for a while. From my research some double ball bearing fans can last around 50'000 hours, so that's around 5 years of continuous use.
Fan MTBF is always given in some particular (usually: optimistic) conditions. They have little direct meaning, but are important for comparing products (especially from the same brand).

Tbh I had cards dying on me way before they developed any fan issues so I wouldn't worry about it that much.

Tho idle fan off is not always the best imo,at least not under certain circumstances.

My own example, whenever I played some older game or simply a GPU light game the fan would barely spin up and the moment I Alt-Tab out it would stop and then spin up again regardless of how I set the fan curve.
Even happened during loading screens when the stress on the GPU droped and that annoyed me after a while.

From my understanding this constand spin up/off puts more stress on the Fan/bearings than lets say a constant fan setting with low-ish speeds.
This is why I've decided to disable this on my card in AMD Wattman and use a constant 40% 'silent' setting.

I'd never buy a GPU without zero RPM mode these days.

100% silence in 2D or light gaming and no wear and tear on the fans. Should last a looong time then.

Usually fans outlast the usefulness of GPUs. You will likely have a new GPU before the old ones fans give out.

Thats right. I still have AGP TNT2 M64 and Radeon 9600 Pro with working fan. The warranty sticker on TNT2 note that the card is from 2001.

What kind of logic is this??? Zero fan was created to eliminate noise during low power situations. It has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the fans.

Anyway, they should last through the warranty on the card and then some... but there are some bad apples. It's tough to pin it down.

I wouldnt worry about this. Just enjoy the card.

There are many exceptions.
Just a couple of hours ago I got an ASUS GTX760 DirectCU for repair. One fan gave out, and customer tried to clean and lube it on his own. Pinched 2 wires between heatsink and a shroud -- blown a 12v fuse along with a mosfet on PWM line )))

Wait a minute, I am about to get my first can of compressed air to see how it goes when cleaning like this. So, you are saying I should be mindful which direction I am directing the air at?

When cleaning fans, it's best not to make them spin like crazy with compressed air. Just hold the blades so they don't spin and spray the air. You can clean with a soft bristle brush or tooth brush to get in the small areas and lift up the dust that won't go away. Finish with like a microfibre cloth.

Dorset where else eh? >>> Thats ENGLAND<<<
Fans are powered by DC motors >>>> spin them without power and they become DC generators (this is Bad if they are still plugged in to devices).
Always lock/jamb fan before cleaning with air.

PS this Prinicipal was used in the motoring/boating world with the Siba and Bosh Dynastart systems (google it )

Just a note here about MTTF (MTBF), it is not a lifetime estimate. Assuming a constant failure rate, the probability of failure at time equals MTTF is already 63%.

Nah, computer fans are pretty durable when it comes to forced spinning with compressed air. They can't generate any electricity (without modifications) and you'd never produce significant amounts of heat with all that cooling airflow.
Still not recommended doing it though, mainly because it applies a twisting load to the bearing that has potential to do damage over time.

Cans of air are a waste of money. You should air out your computer every 3 months get something like htis and it will clean more than just your PC

A single can of air (0.4l) lasts me 4 PC cleanups easily - a year with your frequency. And it costs $2.
That XPOWER is not exactly compact too (bigger than a 0.4l can anyway). I try not to collect rarely used gadgets that take so much space.

What else do you clean with an air blower?

The Vents for my air conditioning, My barbq, the air filter on the wife's car and the area between the seats that the vacumn can't reach, the sink when it gets clogged and used computer parts.

The last fan I had fail on a GPU was a 40mm on an x1650...

I honestly haven't had to clean my system out since I built it...

You can get a narrow extender to the vacuum cleaner which, nomen omen, actually cleans - not pushes dirt around.
I use a vacuum cleaner for everything above sans the barbeque, which seems somehow unorthodox. Aren't grills covered in fat and soot, not dirt...?
the sink when it gets clogged
I'm very skeptical about cleaning a clogged sink with 90CFM air blower. ;-)
