Faulty Q6600 CPU??? - please help!

Okay it did it again, with all Mobo voltages set to their safe maximums (green setting). i took a picture of the error screen, it was slightly different this time though. Normally it is a CMOS checksum error. :confused:

I have tried reseating the CPU and cooler to see if it was that, only time will tell. But it looks like my dad will be downgrading back to a dual core when I get my q9450 in a couple of weeks. Unless anybody has any bright ideas?

I have come to the cross roads with NVIDIA mobo with random crashes and lockups.

So when you get that error go you power down and restart and boots up OK?

You might want to try replacing the battery on the motherboard. I've seen brand new motherboards with half dead batteries on them and you can end up with random boot problems like you're having. It's possible that your bios settings are getting dumped when you boot up which would be reported as a CMOS error.

yes, pressing reset button powers it up and then comes up with this message.

The battery reading in the bios is 2.96v. And it made no difference changing it on the last mobo.

From what I remeber everything was fine until we put the quad in. So its either faulty (which I dont believe cus surely it would fail all the time or NEVER boot) or its just nvidia having shit support for quads.

If it goes again, my dad's gonna by my e6600 off me and stick with that. I'm so glad I opted for a P45.

Thats a different error. theres jumpers that can be hooked up on some cases, so that if the panel gets taken off the system alerts you - its so that say, in an office the techies would know you flogged some ram.

There may be a BIOS option to turn it off, or a physical switch/jumper - check the manual.

I know I thought of that. I looked through the bios and there are no options. There is a intruder connector on the mobo. manual is useless. i know what they are for, lol. I have one on my system

. but i thought it was just being crappy and chucking out random error messages. On my mobo there is always a jumper over the two pins. On my old mobo there was never a jumper. I dont know what this mobo wants. but why would it only do it randomly. Not all the time?

Lol. have you ever known a CPu to be faulty and cause this? We are probably going to put my CPu in, RMA the q6600 if it does it again. Then if it comes back as not faulty, well...

CPU's tend to have three states.

1. stable (normal, fine)
2. unstable (heat/voltage causing random crashes)
3. totally dead. no boot at all.

a CPU has no difference between sitting in a BIOS screen or windows, so if it was going to randomly fail, you'd see it a lot more often during usage, as opposed to booting.

Thats exactly what i thought. just wanted to check. Thanks for all your help mate. If we do put mine in and it runs stable, i will probably just get him to get a new cooler and take it 3.6ghz or something.

This time the warning message was the same as the OP but without the bit about the case being open.

I will tell you that my eVGA 680i board gave me similar issues. The first board suddenly failed to POST with RAM inserted. The new board I recieved from RMA would report the case being open at random times. The third board would not POST reliably with my Q6600 inserted unless I bumped the RAM voltage up to 2.0v. It would post fine sometimes, and give an error message similar to yours others.

My suggestion would be to set your RAM voltage to at least 2.0v and see what happens. If it doesn't work, RMA the motherboard.

Ram voltage is at 2.1v, cus he is using my ram atm.

i cant see the point RMAing the board. This is our second board. first was an XFX 680i LT.
Did you ever get the q6600 stable?

Only thing I noticed different this time, was that it was the first time which it didnt reset the CMOS. :wtf:
