FEAR 3: not as bad as I thought it would be

As with FEAR 2 the ability to wall lean has been eliminated and FEAR 3 has been consolified (no need to heal, you automagically heal over time, no user initiated saves possible) but the game is still entertaining.

Even though the game is DX11 the graphics don't look all that much better than FEAR 2, the water effects might look better.

The F.E.A.R. franchise progressed a bit similarly to the way Dead Space did. As it went on, it became more fast paced. However I would say the original F.E.A.R. was the best by a greater margin than was the original Dead Space, however the Dead Space Remake seems to be changing that. Conversely, despite a lot of hate from fans on DS 3, which I still don't get, I think DS 3 was a better end to DS than F.E.A.R. 3 was to F.E.A.R.. F.E.A.R. 3 grew on me a bit like it did you OP, but I still couldn't help but think it was rather gimmicky in how you had to keep quickly moving from one enemy you possessed to another. It was also a pretty short game, but all things considered, that was probably best to avoid getting burned out on the repetitive combat loop.

One of the best things about the original F.E.A.R. IMO was how it showcased the ability of enemy AI to utilize objects in the environment to tip over for cover, and how to player could use Reflex Boosters to get in some spectacular slow mo visuals. If you so much as enabled Reflex just before an enemy walked toward a gas pipe valve, fire extinguisher, etc, then shot that device (even at it while they stood in front of it), you would often get some spectacular slo mo visuals. This included slo mo decapitations, limb severing, and even cutting bodies in half with the shotgun.

My only nit pick with F.E.A.R. 1 was often times instead of bodies severing, you would get a strange physics bug where necks, etc, would stretch weirdly

I made a lot of videos of F.E.A.R, but unfortunately it was back when capture tech wasn't as good, and my PC wasn't the greatest.

This is one of a few videos I made where my focus was on humor and slow mo visuals. It involved dubbing in some of the game's dialog audio (only the first 30 sec). It is best viewed on YT's default viewer size. Background music is Silent Screams by Halford.

kind of reminds me of crysis in that after the "success" of the first one they tinkered with the formula on each release trying to appeal to the masses but creating a different game than what made the original work

Yeah, that was the typical bash, which I always felt was short sighted. You always as well though have many players wanting sequels to bring something new to a franchise to keep it fresh. The main thing the DS3 haters echoed was the faster pace and more waves of enemies. I'd often remind them even DS2, which seemed to be widely accepted by comparison, had plenty of moments of waves of monsters rushing the player. And let's not forget those bullet sponge (for lack of a better word) Brutes in 1 and 2, which DS3 had NONE of. Instead DS3 upped the ante a bit in a more clever way IMO, via some epic boss fights OTHER than just the big cliff monster 1 had, and the Tormenter 2 had. Granted, the 2nd fight with the giant spider was a huge ammo drain, but I always was able to go back to the place I found the probe parts, which had no monster spawns, to resupply. The 3rd fight with him though was pretty cool in how you could trap him and quickly dispose of him.

At the end of it all, I couldn't help but think many just didn't take the time to get to know weapon crafting well in DS3, which even for me at first, was daunting. Once you know how to craft good ones and where to find the parts though, those monster waves are MUCH more manageable. The main writer of Dead Space 1, Glen Schofield, said himself he felt the direction they took 2 and 3 involving more outbreaks, made sense, and I agree.

About the only things about DS3 I find a bit off putting are the trashy love triangle dialog, and the missions and artifacts blocked from SP play due to Coop, but those bits comprise less then 10% of the game. If you really want a play with Carter vibe via SP though, the Awakened DLC suffices IMO.

I remember in the original FEAR (and Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate) shooting walls kicked up clouds of dust, so much you couldn't see your enemies anymore. That doesn't seem to be true of FEAR 3 though and it doesn't seem like walls exhibit the same battle damage they did in the original FEAR.
FEAR 2 and FEAR 3 had better graphics though.
I have yet to do a Fettel play through of FEAR 3. If he's a ghost how can human/replica enemies see him and/or hurt him?

Never actually played FEAR3 more than a hour. Loved the first (and the expansions), and FEAR2 was also good. I need to give FEAR3 an another chance though.

FEAR was good for its time, does not hold up today. 1600x900 on high settings was nearly impossible to play.

F.E.A.R needs a remaster tbh
Remake I definitely decided to say but with more thought.

It should be again, ,, the next episode of adversary squad AI.

That's what I remember it for, the first game to get a squad to attack as a realistic non idiot squad Ai group.

I have the three ready for a me run on n steamdeck could go well, probably won't.

Yeah, the AI was incredible at the time. They weren't just headless chickens running around but they had teamwork.

I think the AI in FEAR also has a lot to do with the level/map design. The building design in FEAR frequently doesn't make any sense whatsoever from an architectural or engineering standpoint and that's because the level designers want to give the AI multiple paths to get to the protagonist and sometimes multiple vertical levels so the AI can attack from above and/or below.

I loved the fear series except the last one. That one seemed like they were trying to make it like a military shooter like cod and that crap.

That's a great point about FEAR 3, but unlike COD there's no way you could survive on hardest difficulty level in FEAR 3 without bullet time. The consolification of FEAR 3 is pretty obvious though, no manual saves, no medkits, no armor and auto-healing. What's weird is that there's no wall leaning in FEAR 3 but there is a cover system, which can be useful but for some reason isn't as fluid as the wall leaning ability in the original FEAR.

What I recall from the original F.E.A.R. game was that you knew when something bad was about to go down; there would be a slight hesitation in your frame rate, and I could hear the hard drive cueing-up some mayhem for the game to unleash on you. There was always that subtle pause or hesitation just before something spawned, and without realizing it, you quickly became accustomed to recognizing that as a signal to be somewhere else.

For that reason, it's probably the best example of a game I can think of that absolutely should be installed on an SSD within a relatively modern system. I first played this on my Dad's Athlon XP platform with a Radeon 850XT PE. I may have been 13, or so.

In Extraction Point, the mood throughout the game was very somber, very dark, very depressing. Especially with regard to Jin Sun-Kwon. At first, I thought Perseus Mandate was going to be an unmitigated disaster, as the early levels and associated gameplay were sub-par. But things became better, and a lot more interesting later. At least, as well as I can remember; I only played through that one once, many years ago.

EA is asking peeps about a DS2/DS3 remake, dunno who owns the FEAR IP, but they should float that idea as well. many of us, I hesitate to say old timers as it'd make me feel old, have really good memory of FEAR and its gameplay. Honestly, very, very few modern games excite me, but remakes, like DSR which I'm on my 3rd playthrough, is so damn much fun.

I honestly think older games were more well thought out, and more well executed, and I honestly wouldn't mind IF remakes were made of classic games like FEAR (and its sequels), Far Cry (okay, shoot me, but I love Jack Carver, only hope that IF this gets done, that the dev don't make Valerie look like a hag), a little known game called Enclave (which I seriously doubt would even be considered), etc.

EA is asking peeps about a DS2/DS3 remake, dunno who owns the FEAR IP, but they should float that idea as well.

I'd be all for DS2 and DS3 remakes, especially if they could manage to improve them as much as they did the original with the the Dead Space Remake. I think especially DS3 many would be full willing to retry if EA could focus on improving the main things most didn't like about it. Better yet, I think these remakes, again, IF done as well as the Dead Space Remake, would go a LONG way toward making continuing the series viable. And I also think if it comes to that, EA ought to consider bringing back the Visceral Games crew to head the making of future Dead Space titles. I also think EA need to at this point realize that this all could have been avoided had they just listened to their fanbase and developers more. I have to admit though, I've had more faith in them since Titanfall 2 and Jedi Fallen Order, but they need to give their love to more than just Respawn. Visceral Games is a LOT better than they gave them credit for.
