February Windows 10 Update Causing Loss of USB and Blue Screens!

As posted over at Computer World, the February Windows 10 patch for the fall creators update to version 1709 is causing serious crashes and loss of USB.

When most everyone is using USB ports for their mouse and keyboard, this will render them inoperable.

Best case is to uninstall the Feb update:

By far, the most common problem involves broken USB ports: Install this month’s cumulative update for Win10 Fall Creators Udpate, and your USB-connected devices stop working. There’s a lengthy discussion on AskWoody. One anonymous poster says:

Been dealing with this on several machines today. I uninstalled the update, reboot (Which resolves the issue) then I re-apply the update, reboot and the USB devices work normally. It seems to effect random PCs. I see it more with USB devices that require 3rd party drivers.​

Rhherren goes on to say:

Same issue here for us. Our team is having reports of USB devices not working after the login screen. The devices work fine in BIOS. Still no fix yet here for us.​

On the MSI (gaming notebook) forum, trongod says:
I thought I would pass this information along. Tonight I had to reboot my laptop. After rebooting I lost my usb mouse and any device plugged into the USB ports. I went into my device manager and saw 3 devices that said drivers could not be found:

• MSI EPF USB
• USB Receiver
• USB Receiver

I knew the night before a Windows 10 update was installed so I looked up the last update which was KB4074588. According to this site LAPTOPNINJA, it says the following:
Addresses issue where the certutil.exe -MergePfx feature couldn’t produce a merged EPF file for multiple V1 certificates.
Addresses issue where booting with Unified Write Filter (UWF) turned on may lead to stop error 0xE1 in embedded devices, particularly when using a USB HUB.
Since both of those particular updates had both EPF and USB involved, I uninstalled the update. After that everything was working again. Looks like Microsoft is breaking stuff again and I don’t see any updated chipset drivers on the MSI site since the original. I may have to see if I can find something more up to date, try those and then attempt the update again.​

Just re-install the same drivers as before. I had to do this for my USB DAC and my Realtek onboard audio after an update, because Windows could no longer find it's path with these items.

IKR, that's the price for forced updates policy. Some people complained about HDD spikes, others had problems with superfecth and service host which caused 100% cpu usage, windows defender scanning the same files over and over again causing overall slowdowns ... meh I dunno. Lol and if someone has problems and asks on MS forum they usually say "back up your files, and do system refresh" it's their only response. And I've noticed that people come back after Refresh and say that it didn't solve their problem.

i got that update about 2 weeks ago, one of those "phew!" moments, when you realize you COULD have been boned, and didnt even know it

they might wanna think about changing it from quality updates, to "Quality" updates

It is a known issue with the update as mentioned on the MS website under details for this update:

After installing this update, some USB devices and onboard devices, such as a built-in laptop camera, keyboard or mouse, may stop working. This may occur when the windows update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.

I had it install automatically 10 days ago, thankfully no issues my end.

No problems, other than my printer like I mentioned earlier. I seriously wonder if I should uninstall it anyway, before it bones my keyboard or mouse?

I can tell you it’s not just Windows 10. Same update number on my W7 HTPC yesterday totally borked Bitdefender Internet Security, leaving it with most functions off and in constant need to update and restart, but never actually updating.

I solved by uninstalling and hiding the update and having to do a reinstall of Bitdefender. All is good with the world on that pc now.

Known issues in this update

1) After installing this update, some devices may fail to start, and return INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
(Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release)

This is the worst, WTF seriously? Another dice roller?!

2) Affects some versions of antivirus software

3) Even though the update was successfully installed, Windows Update incorrectly reports that the update failed to install.

If you're unsure it's better to skip this March CU, just like the February one

I managed to sort the previous issue originally reported, I kept my keyboard/mouse functionality however I lost my USB printer, after the update I kept getting an error message saying that older printers were not compatible with USB3, even though my motherboard has USB2 as well as 3 ports and it was plugged into a 2. After a week of frustration and annoyance I found that in Device Manager under USB controllers that there was a Marvell device driver added that didn't look familiar, I checked my motherboard specs and there was no Marvell device so I deleted it and it then worked! Sadly I was very pleased with myself

Id hope so you cant do updates with an inaccessible boot device.

Nah, I even went in and removed everything a couple of times trying to get the ability to roll back whatever they'd done. Fortunately, the last update un-broke the USB mess, and didn't break anything else noticeable this time.
