So my Asus Dual RTX 4070 Super was typically running at 80c with a hotspot of 98.5c using stock settings while gaming. When I purchased it new on release, it was much cooler. Id have to dig into my notes to find the temps, but they were never this high. So of course, I took it apart to investigate. The past had cooked and was pretty much non existant. The pads all looked good, but there were pads covering empty vram and vr spaces. Got rid of those and covered just the necessary places. I used Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut paste on the chip.
Now I had to choose, either put the old shroud back on, or slap some 100/92/80mm fans in its place. Although I wish I had tested with the shroud back in place BEFORE I reinstalled it with the replacement fans, I skipped that step.
I used a 92mm BeQuiet fan pushing air into the heatsink and a 80mm Arctic fan pulling air through the heatsink.
Testing. 3 runs each
Stock Settings
1- 3DMark, Stl Nmd 59/66/69c
2- 3DMark, Prt Ryl 64/72/75c
3- CODMW III MP 63/72/74c
OC Settings: Pwr Lmt 110, Temp Lmt 82, Gpu +155, Vram +255
1- CODMW III MP x3 consecutive, different levels 63/73/75c
Thoughts on results...
Sure, a repad and paste would have been sufficient as the cooler on the gpu is decent, but the fans are LOUD at 80% (what I typically had to run them at), so I think the de shroud and new fans will work out nicely. Now I can push the card harder, without as much throttling. I do plan to purchase two Thermalright 92mm x 15mm fans to replace the ones used in testing. Ill post back results if anyone is interested.
