I suspect people will figure out a way to distinguish between them. They've been making a 13" Macbook Pro for years and it's been called that from the beginning and nobody bitches about getting the wrong one. I'm sure it will have a model number or a beginning production date (April 2012 or whatever) will allow potential purchasers to distinguish what they are buying.

apple is obviously doing things right.

Yup, they make an iffy move like this with the product name to get attention - and just look at how it's worked!

Question is, will it be the sort that continues to make them huge sales or is everyone just gonna knock them and their brand will eventually be tarnished? Initial indications are that it's selling big and that they haven't made a mistake from that point of view.

Meh..just read the specs sheet before buying (look for "2048x1536 retina display" and "A5X CPU" and "quad-core graphics"). If the seller/store doesn't provide that, buy from someone who does.

Anyone who buys a new iPad by looking just at the first line of the product specifications (what the number next to "iPad" is) deserves to get ripped off.

Why would anyone in their right mind knock them for making a good product? If anyone gets "ripped off" from the name its their fault. Not Apples. I mean how many ipods have been sold? How many revisions of the ipod touch? Yet no one went all emo. People are just butt hurt they cant afford the new ipad. Thats all this is.

Your opinion on the subject, and even my own, is going to be biased, as we undertand tech a bit more than the average joe. Those that aren't as tech savvy do not care about hte same things as you do, or I do, and because it's not real tech enthusiasts that buy apple products, a tech enthusiasts opinion about Apple products has no merit, or importance. And obviously the sales of Apple products portray a very differnet situation than the one you personally present.

After all, you use a PC, and not a Mac, and run Windows, not OSX. Clealry these devices are not intended for you, so why are you so up in arms about Apple?

I don't quite understand, so please do take this a real question(which it is).

Have fun on a 4:3 screen, at a high res that no games will be playable at unless they are 2D.
What exactly is "quad core graphics" someone please explain?

Its a stupid move calling it an ipad, even if you are a "smart consumer" that is a misleading product name.

I'm not 'up in arms' about it - man, I'm not that mad about it! It's a piece of technology and it makes for a good talking point though.

Regardless of whether I use Apple products or not, it's dumb calling two different products (or gens of the same product) the exact same name and will cause lots of confusion. It looks like it's intentional too, on Apple's part and the article I linked to made a lot of good points about this, so I posted it.

Just take a look at MM's latest post to me: he's signed it off "(Sent from ipad)". Now, give that a couple of weeks and we won't be able to tell if he means first gen, or third gen - a crisis of grand proportions! lol :) There's another side to this naming: it's not actually out yet. Once physically released, will it really be called "iPad", or will it have a slightly different name to distinguish it? It wouldn't surprise me if Apple's playing all of us and the joke will be on us, lol.

And cad, I know your questions are always, real, no worries there my friend. :toast:

@MilkyWay

I have to say that its screen aspect ratio and resolution are the two things I think are good about it. The super-high res especially is fantastic and will drive improvements in desktop monitors. I'll bet in six months we'll be seeing higher res models on the market and I can't wait.

Personally, my favourite aspect ratio is 16:10 though. This is also known as the Golden Ratio.

Ok, well that's it. It's not out, noone knows for sure WTF the name is, or if it even has one. So knocking apple for doing something that isn't even confirmed...seem like you are "up in arms" to me.

BTW, because I am a musician, and stuff like this is important....The Golden Ratio..is NOT 16x10. It's 1/6, or 10/6, or 1.6666666666666666 ad infinium. 16x10 is just 1.60, so isn't the actual "Golden Ratio"

I do not agree with naming products the same as stupid. It's no different than buying a iMac, that comes with liek 5 different screen sizes, or buying a Mac Pro box, whose specs can vary hugely. A macbook has been a Macbook for years, although the ones today are a far cry from the ones of yesteryear, so I fail to see your argument here..in fact, Apple was stupid by calling the iPad 2 , the iPad2, which actually was quite a fir bit out fo their normal naming schemes. And and iPod is an iPod. An iPad is an iPad, no matter what generation it is.

Ok, it's clear that we'll disagree on the name issue, so we'll leave it there.

However, yes, you're right about the Golden Ratio and I'm aware of the difference. It's just that there's no way there's ever gonna be a screen with a 1.66... ratio, so I simply rounded it, lol. 16:10 is near as dammit anyway.

lulz. you know, it's definitely a weird situation, that's for sure, but I much prefer that Apple goes back to tradition, so to speak. This is their first product launch without Steve Jobs, isn't it?

I mean ,to me, that means they are going to want to make a statement with this launch, and going back to the "old way" may be their attempt at building consumer ocnfidence. I mean, in the least, it's done a good job as raising some hype for the new device, and getting people talking about it.

I think the whole thing is bloody brilliant. I didn't mean to nail ya on anything, just a bit of stuff to keep the conversation going, as at least you know i mean nothing by any on it.

You're a troublemaker. End of, Cad. I'm gunna run a bogus number past you next time and watch ya fall for it! qubit has a little quantum sulk :D

Yes, it is their first product without Jobs and this tactic (if that's the right word) with the name doesn't feel like the Jobs touch. I don't think he would have hyped it in this way and yes, I do find something like this irksome, even though I'm not looking to buy an iPad anyway.

As I said before, it's the sort of thing that gets everyone talking about their new product, but is it in a way that boosts sales, or just slags them off for being dorks and tanks sales instead? I saw in a news article yesterday or the day before, saying that they were sold out on their preorders, so it looks to have worked here. However, it's still too early to say if they can keep the momentum going now that Jobs is gone. I think the iPhone 5 will be a good benchmark for this.

Interestingly, I read an article the other day, where Nick Farrell has an opinon piece where he reckons Apple have lost the plot and are in terminal decline, at Fudzilla. What do I think? They're making vast profits right now, so I think it's a little too early to say whether they're gonna go downhill or not. Note that I'm saying this independently of what I think of their business practices, which everyone knows I'm not keen on.

I agree, but you know, i do have some minor uses for it, like surfing the web in bed(laptop sucks for this), or playing bejeweled. Also makes a good eBook reader.

Unfortunately, it's vastly overpriced for just those uses, but that isn't gonna stop me from buying the new one.
