think its another $700-800 card? cause i say fuck that

If its that much money then its fail. Im sure a single 4870 could get close to it when the drivers get better and costs half of the price.

Eh, like bt said, the 4870 won't probably compete w/ this. Maybe the gtx260, more likely the gts or gt of the 2xx series. The 4870x2 probably will though, and that should be cheaper than $600.

i 2nd this its doubtful they shot for the 280 on the single card but since ATi seems to have the dualie card down they will have there asses covered on the 280 question is will NV get the GX2 to run well or will it have a box of problems attached with it

I don't know if they'll be able to get a gx2 out of the gt200 core. It looks like they already got a ton packed in there. Seems like they may be planning on this being the biggie for the 2xx series and the revision for the gt200 will have a dual like last gen.

With a dual gpu and mature drivers. Its on par w/ dual gpu's w/ the last generation, hence 100% gain. You can't expect a single gpu to come along and blow away 2 from the last gen. If it did, the prices would be astronomical. This is the beginning of the new gen, and we'll see how the price works out, b/c that's really the key here.

the 8800gtx did, it didn't exactly crush the 7950gx2 but it did beat it by decent margin. which is what everyone was expecting again. pity the manuf can't seem to repeat that king of upgrade each release.

Seems that way to me. It seems they are following a similar formula to last time, releasing the big bad beast first then the lower ones. In that article they mention this is to be the highest end of the 2xx series, and no mention of a gx2 for this series has come around yet. And by the looks of it, they will need a shrink to get two in one.........

This is starting to get funny. All I'm looking for is a card that can play everything at 1920x1200 & not cost me a body part. Is that so much to ask. However it will save on the gas by producing enough heat for my entire house  All I'll have to do is game all winter  NV needs a PP card bad. Paying $600-700 for a card that still gets eaten by Crysis is getting kinda old

That Crysis result is better than what I've seen with SLI 88GTXs at 1680x1050, so thats fairly impressive. The truth, like was mentioned, is its simply to early to reasonably expect to max out Crysis at 1920x1200 and anti aliasing with a single gpu.

Do remember though that the extra bandwidth and vram these offer over G92 and R670 will help at 1920-2560 when AA is in the picture. 512MB of memory is no longer enough for these xhd resolutions and high levels of AA. The 1GB GDDR5 4870 board partner releases won't have this issue either but I'd expect these cards to be another $50 more than ATIs stock variant. Unless your playing at 1680x1050 with no AA or less, getting the 512 4870 isn't too smart at this point personally. I think Nvidia have nailed this on the head with this new generation. My guess is the GTX260 will do quite well.

they may have the added fact that AMD left the 256bit bus which could be a big kill on its graphics cards...

256-bit gddr5 has the same bandwidth as the 512bit gddr3. spo thers no different in bandwidth this time around. it's just 2 different ways of meeting in the same memory performance point.

and we'll see how much gpu memory matters in the long run. thus far it's been a core limitation on the r600 architecture. and the 4870 isn't targeting the gtx280, thats what the 4870x2 is for, the 4870 is targeting the gtx260.

The 4870 will nearly match the 280 (did you see the performance increases over the 3870?). ATI got a 100% performance increase and while this will probably be 10% slower than the 280, the 4870x2 will completely and utterly own the GTX-280. Nvidia can not simply double the GTX-280 since such a beast would require an external psu (400 watts of power)!

AMD/ATI says that they will never release a card that will cost more than 499 so the 4870x2 will be 499 at start and in three months be down to 399.

See, you really can't say stuff like that until we get more official reviews. All the other numbers we've seen have been speculatory and hype, and may or may not have been fake. This, unless I am mistaken, is from an official source. There's a lot of hype about this and people aren't really seeing things clearly. I very much doubt the 4870x2 will own 280. Beat it performance wise, maybe. Offer better price/ performance, probably. That seems reasonable at least.

Personally, I don't think Crysis will ever get "Maxed Out", due to the fact that it's plain and simple a poorly coded game. GTX280 is too damn expensive, and really, is there any other game besides Crysis that needs so much power? My opinion is no.

I love the quote . The price sting will be equal to pouring holy water on Lind Blair. So a single new 280 will not match a 9800gx2

You're right, it doesn't. Instead the GTX 280 outperforms. :ohwell:

the articles indicates it comes close to matching a 9800gx2 but doesn't say it beats it. I take that back it says it does beat it.On that note a 3870x2 at 284.00 still isn't a bad buy after looking at that comparison. I'm not sure a 4870 would be a upgrade to a 3870x2 am i correct won't they perform near each other.

Slightly outperforms & its basically where it counts, high res w/AA  But their driver ages are too far apart. The preview drivers for the GTX280 also give the 9800GX2 a slight performance boost. Sadly the 9800GX2 is at EOL so it won't be getting any better. This thing still has a while b4 it sees its butter zone. The only messed up thing about that is by that time the GT200b will be ready
