The problem is that AS5 is an extremely thick paste, so it is very hard to get applied in a thin enough layer.

AS5 does the job. It is better than the stock TIM. He is using stock cooler so who cares what Tim he uses. I don't think the thread is a debate what Tim is better too.

No, it really isn't better than the stock paste Intel uses. Intel uses Shin-Etsu, I believe X23-7762 or X23-7783D I can't remember which, but both basically perform the same as AS5 but spread easier.

Who cares. Unless your going to buy him more TIM. The thread is not a Tim brand debate. Stay on topic. He applied the Tim with cardboard. Surely he will see better results re-applying the TIM.

Any thermal paste can help to keep lower temperature if properly applied compared to non-properly applied high quality paste. My temps are staying low and i got a big tube of thermal paste size of tooth paste tube for 5$ shipping included from china and my temps are staying low. It all depend of perspectives and the way you apply it.

OP, it would be slightly helpful to get a picture of the heatsink mounted on the board.

Also, as others have said, just use the heatsink to squish down the thermal paste. Best thing would be to clean it up and reapply. Also, make sure you're mounting it correctly.

90c+ at idles is most likely due to heatsink issues, not installed properly or just not in working order. You can have a cpu with no heatsink on it and get those same results. (90c+)
