First time strategy game recommendations

I would say SimCity4, Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Rebuild one), C&C, etc

I'd stick to Command and Conquer series being the easiest to understand. Start with C&C Tibirium Wars (I prefer that to Red Alert 3. But you can pick whichever theme you like). If you are into old school you can try the older ones like Red Alert 2 (Very old, Like released in the 90s old. But the gameplay = EPIC !).
Other strategy recommendations:
- Age of Empires II (old. Released in the 90s But it was a one of the best RTSs back then)
- Warcraft III. Mixes Strategy with elements of RPG. You said You didn't like RPGs. But I doubt you won't get hooked into this one.
- Age of Mythology. somewhat old school graphics. a good story (if you are into mythology) And above the average gameplay. Similar to AoE. Being made by the same studio.

I'm a little overwhelmed at all the responses. I wasn't expecting that many, but I guess that's what makes TPU so great...

I looked up most of the games that have been talked about and have boiled it down to 2. Red Alert 3 because of the learning curve like TheMailMan78 mentioned and Civilization V because I'm a bit of a history buff. I'm not interested in the space based games and the military games right now because I'm also currently playing Dead Space 2 and Battlefield 2.

World in Conflict is a great RTS for a new guy. It's a bit more linear and easy to use, plus it looks pretty good. Oh, of course there's a Baldwin doing the narration.

Try Battle for Wesnoth. It's a FREE turn-based strategy game, akin to the Heroes of Might and Magic game.
