case: Lian Li OD 11 XL
mobo: msi meg x570 unify wifi
cpu: 5950X Ryzen 9
cpu cooler: EK-AIO 360
cpu paste: thermal grizzly
case fans: corsair ql series
gpu: 3080 Nvidia
memory: ddr4 3600mhz g.skill trident z neo 64GB
psu: 1050W gold seasonic
storage: 2 x 1TB samsung 980 PRO m.2 nvme ssd

I will be using the PC for a combination of heavy competitive gaming (currently on dual 1440p 165HZ monitors) and streaming, as well as video editing, 3d animation, and visual FX.. Would like to future proof for a 4K 120Hz build as well in the future. I was about to do a 10900K build but it seems the 5950X may be better overall option for me.. Thoughts? I also feel that I may be spending premium $ on certain areas, so assuming similar price build, let me know where you guys would make any changes if any

thank you

Are you sure the 980 Pro is what you need?
Even assuming they aren't in RAID (are they?) the price premium is fairly substantial. If you can do with something lesser there's a new king in town ~
Also I'd personally recommend the x570 tomahawk, I'm not using it for anything but an 8 core though it has multiple rave reviews & is the board to get under $300 :toast:
Everything else looks fine, but know this that 5950x should be in huge demand at launch so temper your expectations accordingly.

thanks for the quick response. I don't really know if I "need" it per say. I originally had selected the Seagate Firecuda 520 2TB, but I saw the 980's recently released. I will be working with large and many picture format transfers (I take a lot of raw images with my Sony a7r iv camera) as well as High-particle / dense video and animation rendering. If there's not a noticeable difference, then I can opt for a cheaper option.

RAIDing NVMes and to some extents any kind of SSD at all besides 1 for data integrity (bar some highly specific sequential-only workloads) is asinine. RAID 0/10 does nothing about random access speeds.

In general, the most noticeable speedups are from improved random access, not sequential speeds. Unless you regularly copy hundreds of GiB worth of files, PCIe 4 SSDs as of right now aren't for you.
If you want to splurge on your SSD purchase, buy an Optane, not a 980 PRO. If you don't, the P31 should be your choice.

There is nothing wrong with RAID 0 on NVME. If you have 2 NVME drives in RAID 0 would not writing 1/2 a byte to each drive extend endurance? If you do any kind of video editing you will appreciate having a NVME scratch drive. That train of thought has led to products like this

When things like this exist

There is also no point on the OP buying a board like the Unify if he is not going to to take advantage of the features it provides. If you want the 980 Pros go right ahead but there is nothing wrong with the 520 either from what I have read.

No user will be able to exhaust their SSDs write endurance within their lifetime - you'd have to plug it into a server.
RAIDing your SSDs as 0 just doubles your risk of a total loss (if any of them fails, all your data's gone), while in all likeliness netting you zero performance improvement.

I guess you have never had an SSD die (ebay sale Sandisk SSD 960). Do you have a RAID 0 setup? It doesn't matter though as unless you have a all NAND Based array you won't understand the joy of an all flash based array. When you say something like it netting you zero performance, as there is more to computing than Gaming it is also not true.

LOL anyways there's about a $100 difference between 1 2TB Firecuda and 2 1TB 980 Pro's. Not a significant increase for me when considering the speed difference as well as the overall price of the build I am going for. I wasn't planning to run them in RAID unless I should be? Don't care much for data loss, as long as I can reformat again without any issues. I have external drives I store more important data on.

Not really, other than benchmarks it wont give you anything worth the risk (RAID-0). Even PCI-E 4.0 over PCI-E 3.0 NVMe drives have nothing really to show other than benchmarks. Unless you transfer dozens of GBs every day.
RAID-0 arrays is total useless to 99% of users. Also samsung's PRO line over EVO. The only real benefit of PROs is the TBW rate. I'm using a 970Pro 512GB for over a year as OS/Boot drive and after 6765TB of total writes its still 100% remaining life.

BTW nice PC you're going to build. I dont have any recommendations if prices are not a problem to you.
MSI X570 Unify is one of the best X570 out there. And X570 Tomahawk is really close in price with some less features, so...
For thermal paste, by "Thermal Grizzly" I hope you mean Conductonaut. I use it and IMO really suits the Ryzen chiplet design with its thermal density.

I mean, if you do care about sequential speeds there isn't really anything on the market that can exceed the ~2.5GBps wall on sustained writes (after cache is full), so there isn't that much of a gain from PCIe 4 at all. (Only the 980 PRO manages to not throttle down to SATA speeds anyways.)

Generally speaking however, you shouldn't be worrying too much about sequentials (I still wouldn't recommend anything that cannot handle at least 1GBps sustained - you'll probably do that once every other blue moon, but when you do copy over all your archives you'd be really pissed at your NVMe throttling to SATA speeds, or below. Especially considering that excellent SSDs that do not throttle that hard can be had at barely premium prices.) - it's the randoms that really matter, and neither PCIe 4 nor RAID-0 will do anything about those.

Everything looks good..... The Unify is great and ryzen 5000 seems like it's gonna be much better than Intel 10th gen you'd likely be even better with a 5900X over a 10900k to be honest so good move going with Ryzen.

There's really no such thing as future proof so just buying what you need/want is the smart way to go.
