Flat or curved monitors

Hated my brief experience with curved 24" 16:9 screen. Afterwards, straight walls appeared, well, curved and hallways seemed concave.

I can maybe see the reason for it in ultrawides, but I'm not buying those anytime soon.

I have one curved monitor; my main monitor.

I think that having a curved screen only makes sense if it's an ultrawide (like my main monitor) screen or just really big (>40"). It needs to fill a large part of your field of view to have any benefit.

I have a flat screen.

I have 3 flatscreens, wide 27 inch.
Look from one end to the other too fast and you risk whiplash.

I would prefer a flat IPS monitor, not much about the curved or not but about the panel type. Right now all curved monitors are VA which typically has bad response time from black to gray causing black smearing.
Also I've seen some cases of curved monitors delam by itself and the supplier doesn't cover that in warranty

I have a 32QC and absolutely love it. That is about as far as I'd go for a curve though (1500R) as I tried an LG one with a super aggressive curve and I did not like it at all.

I really like VA panels. I think they're a great compromise between the responsiveness of TN, the color fidelity of IPS, and the deep blacks of OLED. While not as good at those specifics as either of the other technologies, VA panels do all of them well enough.

Yes, I do get lots of smearing on dark images. It doesn't really bother me and hasn't affected my usage at all. YMMV.

Though QD-OLED does look awesome and I hope prices come down as the tech gets better.

It all comes down to size, viewing distance and use case. Ultra wide curved are perfect for gaming & immersion. If you're mostly into productivity flat makes more sense.

The curved TV's did die pretty quick because 16:9 isn't wide enough, viewing distance is way bigger than to a monitor & the bad off center viewing angles is just bad for watching in groups.
It just wasn't practical at all. A curved ultra wide monitor on the other hand is.

To complement the post above, curved canvas/display really shines in movie theaters, not much use for it at home. 22-27" monitors being flat is more than enough.

Curved monitors provide consistent viewing distance from the screen. Aids immersion when gaming.

Heres one example: I can fit two 32" curved in the same space as 2x27" flat, and the second screen being curved is less strain to turn my head to look at - i'm still looking at it 'straight on' instead of needing... you know what, i need MS paint

Forgive my atrocious artwork. I am an artist, and I refute any and all claims i'm REALLY BAD AT THIS.

With dual or triple monitor you can either have the screens parallel (black like) or angled (red line). If you dont run the red line, you're not looking straight on at the screen and you're literally not seeing all of it, optical illusion style.
(I run dual - but i'm seated facing the center. You can remove the left most screen and you have my setup, from these examples)


With curved - and these are fantastic 100% totally accurate to scale curves of course - you turn your head and you still see everything straight on
(seriously, the curves arent accurate. I'm not capable of drawing it right, just trying to explain what i mean)

Curved is not great for photo editing. I'll never defend it for professional work, but it is great for a single user sitting in a fixed location, to get the screens facing directly at you so you can see the entire thing


Extreme example: if you're side on to a flat screen you get nada

Curved you get more

So under certain setups, you're possible - not guaranteed, but possible - to be able to use more of your screen space, with curved.

Flat because I use them for work as well and have a 3 screen setup with 27" LG GL850B
