So I'm gonna put together a folder/cruncher rig here soon but wanted to get some advice on socket and chips.
1st question is 1156 vs 775. I'm not going to be able to drop more than $150 into the processor so a nice dual core 1156 like the 655k would be almost all I can afford where as I found a nice Xeon/Q9450 for the same price. Which would be better for crunching? I'm guessing the quad would do better.
2nd is board choices. I can easily find a simple single PCIE slot board in either 775 or 1156 but I'd like to use two gpus for F@H in the future. For the 775 I was thinking of the 750i set(Evga has Bstock for $50) but I'm not sure which to go with on the 1156 side. The 1156 will need DDR3 which will be an additional cost I dont want to incur. Probably an open box less than $75.
3rd GPU choices Right now I've got a 260 just waitin to start folding. I'm thinking about a 295 which should pull some serious ppd, and a used cost of $240 is very appealing. I'd like to have a pair of 285's but thats a pipe dream for now.
Should I pick up another 260? What kind of ppd could I expect with 2 260's? 20k? That is what an nice 295 should pull as well, right?
Additional components:
Case: who cares it'll be in the garage
PSU: will need to pick one up 2nd hand, probably a 750W Silencer or Corsair
HDD: again who cares as long as it installs F@H and WCG and W7 I'm good
RAM: Depends on the board, ddr2 1066 for 775 or ddr3 1333 for 1156 roughly 2GB
Peripherals: who cares probably a used Dell crap; wait I think I have a wireless mouse/kb
PPD/WU: should be awesome!
Thanks for the help guys!
