A Diablo Immortal player spent $15,000 getting a rare gem, then destroyed it in protest

One analysis released shortly after launch suggested it could cost up to $110,000 to fully max out a post-game character with legendary gems.

Sooo there was a thread here about how great microtransactions are for gaming, let the shaming commence. Goodbye gaming, it was nice while it lasted.

$110,000 to spend on one game? How did gamers get this damn stupid? This beats Star Citizen with their $37,000 Ship Bundle.

that's just for gems before they are "awakened"
and this is not on "one game" this is per character. and once seasons begin you have to spend at least half of the money again.

Meh

Just another way to separate fools from their money.

The counterargument to microtransactions is just don't do it. Don't buy stuff, play the game because it's fun to play and don't spend money on it.

Businesses are banking on the idea that out of all the people playing that at least half of them will spend some kind of money on these micro transactions, be it from a couple of bucks for something basic to maybe a few hundred dollars. After that they get into the psychology of it all and you can expect some much smaller percentage willing to spend thousands of dollars and then even a smaller percentage to drop money on the game well exceeding any normal person might fathom to spend on it.

Those people that have that addiction to instant gratification or even gambling will be the ones feeding these companies all that money. The company doesn't care who pays them and how much, as long as people are paying.

This guy that spent around $15K USD, they don't give a shit that he used the 5star item or what he did with his account. Activision/Blizzard is now rolling around on his $15K and happy one single person was dumb enough to do it. Even if this guy has millions of dollars to his name and this $15K was just a drop in the bucket for him, he is just part of the problem by reinforcing businesses to do shitty micro transactions. All I get from the story is the guy has more money than sense and he's just a flipping moron for supporting Activision/Blizzard.

Yup, there is only one solution to end microtransactions. Don't spend any money on the games that have it. If it is free to play, go ahead and play it, as long as you don't spend any money.

It seems like a lot of gamers spend money on microtransactions. Take a look at League Of Legends that has generated billions and billions of dollars from microtransactions. My advice is to skip a game if it requires that to be interesting to play but I don't expect anyone to take that advice any more than take the advice to not pre-order games. Hell, Cyberpunk 2077 got 8 million pre-orders and only 30,000 of those gamers requested a refund.

i blame zynga ~2008 mafia wars on FB. :D

use to be all in clans and wars and all that. so it really was nothing to justify $20-$40 for recreation on the week ends grabbing some game cards for $20 a pop. it wasn't too long, a few months, i looked at the stack of scratch offs and realized i could have built a gaming rig and a bought a butt load of games.

glad i got that out of the way then.

I did and do play free2play micro games and thats pretty much what I do.
If its a free2play MMO on PC and I play it long term/enjoy it then I might buy some cosmetics and thats it. 'Played Vindictus for ~7 years and my total money spent on that game was less than 100$'

I've played a mobile game for 2 years now and I'm yet to spend a penny on it, sure I'm not exactly on a competitive level but that I don't care about its just a time killer when I'm lazy in the bed.

As for the streamer/video.

Back in the earlier Diablo 3 days I've used to watch him cause he made some solid guide vids 'He used to be one of the few top Monk players' and whatnot and he wasn't a 'big' streamer yet so he was a lot more acceptable imo.
Nowadays I very rarely watch him or any streamer for that matter but from I know he did it for science to see how bad is it for real, obviously this wasn't any serious money for him and most likely made it back while streaming anyway.
Sure Blizz got his money but he also sent a very bad message about the game to a lot of ppl so I guess it did something positive too.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
playing it with minimal paying it (just the lowest tier battlepass for kickstart), i can assure that the game is still playable and enjoyable without getting legendary crest or anything else with real $$$

as i mentioned in "what are you playing" if i can do well without whaling, enjoy the story (done once Necro LV60P5, Barb 38 and Crsdr 31 following) and pass on Pointless Versus Pointless(tm) i do not need to pay more than what i did, which is technically not being f2p but i wanted to show some support for a "almost" AAA mobile/PC shared MMOARPG and given the pleasure i had to play what is indeed a Diablo with "mobile induced microtransaction", i can say that 10$ was a meager price to pay. (plus i paid with google play points :D so, technically it was free  )

the game is not to blame, the players are at fault ... "but the game throw me "paid package" to the face with each dungeon i finish!!!!!" mmhhh... i can ignore them, no biggies! "but there is paid monthly advantages that make me and other better!!!!" mmhhh... i do not need them nor do i care who has the biggest on the server... (never was one for competition, it make games less fun ...)

who can blame Blizz to take advantage from those with less restraint/self control, no one is forcing them to pay to enjoy the game, right?

i have a sh!ttons of mobile f2p games, i only truly invested some money in Azur lane (well... i have a soft spot for warship/naval warfare plus the devs are generous and it's been 3 yrs out of 4 i did not spend a scrap on it for game progression (aka gacha ressources) and i am in endgame area, only missed one ship from a banner and regularly top rank in exercise, which is Pointless Versus Pointless(tm)although i am not top rank in anything else, like total fleet power or EX challenge leaderboard, not that i care hehe) recently started Artery Gear (for an hilarious reason involving the artist PandeaWork who did some artwork for Azur lane with the Atlanta-class CL Reno, and is also behind the original design for Onean and Neisa, two of my favorites full custom follower in Skyrim... the reason? Neisa is in the game as a major character and AG unit and Onean is an AG unit, more hilarious fact? their institution is nammed "Dwemear Academy" Dwemear? Dwemer??? ), quite advanced in it, microtransaction pack are quite pricey in it but they are not essential for progression

microtransaction are like aRGB in some ways ... but less customizable

It really is the simple idea of 'You get what you pay for'.
If you pay for F2P MTX infested crap, you will get more F2P MTX infested crap.

We collectively killed pay to win, in most 'regular' gaming already.
We won't kill it on smartphones because the target market is way too diverse, but for the real gamers: we have a pretty single-minded community, even if we manage to discuss just about every comma. Gamers want fun games, its really that simple, and games riddled with MTX every step of the way, in an intrusive or game-altering way, are always going to meet the problem that they impede on fun. Or: the fun won't last: it is disguised as a psychological trick and not as good gameplay. The psychology of 'preference/reference drift', for example, or that of timed/gated content. Its as simple as the key you collect to open a chest. If that key is not obtainable with decent gameplay, the game is not fun. You're just chasing the carrot. You're a donkey. And eventually, you'll figure that out.

I wouldn't personally worry too much. There are more and more F2P games with MTX that are presented and work fantastically: DOTA 2. Apex Legends. You get the full suite of gameplay. You buy cosmetics. If that is capable of funding games of this calibre, I'm all for it, really. I'll take that business model ANY DAY over the current wave of cloudbased gaming services that are initially nearly given away, but will eventually go the way of Netflix, with constant price hikes when you've grown accustomed to them. In both cases you own nothing. But in the latter case, you also control nothing. You have no power as a customer: you're reduced to a subscriber, heck you can't even support the devs/studios/games you prefer. There are zero guarantees on the content behind your account access. Its like subbing a magazine that may have content in it, or white pages, you just won't know until you get the new monthly edition. You're literally a commercial plaything now - you're the product shareholders are making money on. Its a dystopian idea. Its Cyberpunk 0.9. You're one step away from losing all control as a customer.

So... pick your battles and be careful what you wish for.

I think it is FAR more worrying to see PAID games get MTX stores, like most of Ubisoft's stable lately. I didn't spend a dime on the latest AC's, because of that simple fact. Because now you get paid boosts (non-cosmetic, gameplay influence!) which effectively killed 'free cheating' on your OWN games that you PAID for, because Ubisoft needs to make buck on it. And even by spending on the main game, you're already supporting that practice. And you're not getting a discount on the game either. Its easily moving towards the new target of 69,99 (instead of the 49~59,99 we got used to). For similar reasons, games that aren't moddable, I am highly unlikely to spend money on. Give me control over my purchase, or else.

So again: you get what you pay for, and I see a lot of people even in this topic making noise about Diablo now, but investing in the same practices elsewhere. Get your record straight, I say. We have the power, and we quite often suck at using it proper. What you do, matters, even if you represent just 0,001% - consider the fact that most business cases work on single digit percentages already. All we need to do is prove the profit projections wrong.

Its for that reason too, that I always say 'patience' when it comes to purchases. 'Buying on launch' or as pre order is utter stupidity, and you just quite simply let your desires get the best of common sense. There is no other explanation for it. Reflect on that, every time you feel you 'must' have something 'now'. And for gaming that goes double or even triple: at launch you have the worst experience at the highest expense.

That's enough uncomfortable truths for today :)

I remember when some Nintendo games were upwards of $60-70 when they released - that was back in the mid to late '80s (nearly 40 years ago). It wasn't uncommon to see prices like that, so no one should get their undies in a bunch if prices start to creep up for newly released games.

Price hikes for games don't really impact me. I tend to wait for games to hit the $20 range or less, which means I'm usually a year or two behind when it comes to playing them, but by then most bugs and performance issues are resolved and even DLC may be included with some game purchases.

I do the same thing but I wait until they are $15. Rarely do I pay $20. The last game that I paid $20 for was the first CoD Black Ops and I had to wait 5 years after release on that game. Activision is bad about putting their games on a big sale. The Modern Warfare 2 remake will be $70 but at least it will be on Steam.
